Shell have become extremely competitive recently; in Sheffield diesel sells for about 85pence - 86pence per litre and Tesco are much cheaper (but not 7 miles away in Chesterfield!) at 81pence. Ive noticed that the two Shell garages I know are now both selling diesel at 82pence per litre with Optimax at 87pence; cheaper than Mozzer's super unleaded btw!

fuel prices are a lottery (and guess who don't win!!) Optimax was 89.9p in Diss and the next day (yes STI's really drink it!!) bought Sainbury's superUL for 82.9p in Ipswich can't say I can tell the diff between the performance.

In a UK car its the calorific value that matters so it wont suffer for SUL; Optimax is valued by import owners because of its resistance to pre-ignition. Where people comment: 'much smoother' & 'better MPG' thats a result of the former; where people dont say: 'I blew up!'; thats usually the latter.....

Shell? Competitive? Do me a favour.
Like all oil companies, Shell charge what they can get away with. They even told a friend who runs a shell garage exactly that. Safeway/Morrisons have had a few binges on prices over the years, but as our local has never had SUL only the Wife has ever been able to take advantage of them, and taking advantage is exactly what Tony's cronies are doing taking 75p per pound of fuel they're screwing us for.
The oil companies may well be profiteering ****s, but I'm not complaining about them when the goverment are sticking 300% onto prices

The expression is relative; in the countrys fourth largest city the going rate for DERV is at least 85pence per litre. One retailer (Tesco at 81pence) is significantly cheaper; the only major brand, any for that matter, coming anywhere near is Shell at two seperate stations that I use. That is extremely competitive; irrespective of whether we're being f*cked up the **** left right & centre, which Im sure we are.....

The Morrisons Ive looked at are the old Safeway at Meadowhead and the new one at Catcliffe and the cheap Tesco is the superstore at Abbeydale. At Catcliffe this evening thed dropped a penny but theyre still 15pence per gallon over the odds.

remember that 15pence per gallon equates to over £2:00 when you fill up and that a lot in a market thats supposed to have virtually no profit in it at all.

RB, it all comes from the same place! That 'crap' supermarket fuel is the same as shell or Esso fuel becuae it is only them that refine it. If you go down to Purfleet in Essex, at the Esso terminal there you see fuel tankers coming in to fill up. The tankers are Esso...and Tesco..and Asda....and Sainsbury....etc etc
I think the supermarkets sell it cheaper because they dont make any profit on it and just use it a s a way of getting you to be customer and hopefully go into the main store for your food shopping.

On my way back from Glasgow last night I had to stop for fuel at a BP on the M6. When I went to pay for the 'Ultimate' that cost 96p per litre I asked if the police car that pulled up was there to arrest the garage owner for daylight robbery. Ha Ha Sir, he said. I only put a tenner in and then found Optimax at only 89.9 a bit down the road. If only LPG was possible!

Interesting that the cost of crude is now 25% off its highs but I filled up with diesel yesterday on the M4 at 91.9p!! Complete joke, just as well it was on the fuel card!
