Weeding out the scoob drivers we don't want.
Further to my thread about the phenomenon of Young Drivers buying cheap '93 WRXs and not insuring them because they can't, it has occurred to me (and, no doubt, many others) that this situation and the rash of thefts of facelift lights and grilles are intimately connected.
There was a very honest response to the previous thread with its private poll.
To myself, the results were shocking and disturbing.
I want to know, has anyone on this site bought a set of facelift classic lights and grille on the black market?

I haven't really got anything to say about the lights and grilles but I shall certainly go away and think about it and come back with something more constructive .

And I extrapolate that people who are likely to behave in that way are also likely to support the trade in stolen car parts to make their vehicles look more up-to-date.

Kinell... nearly 200 views and a few responses. I wish that I'd added the "I've been offered a set of lights and grille" option on the poll.

What would you consider "the black market" mate??
eBay?? SNet For Sale Section??
I havent had a problem with buying parts from either of these places. I consider them "safe" places to buy parts from as long as Post Count/eBay Rating's are high, I rarely find myself questioning whether or not the sale is legitimate or not.
However, if I was sitting in my local having a sly shandy and a man walked in with a couple h/lights under his jacket and a grille in his back burner I might consider that to be a little strange!!
Cheers,
Grant

I have stopped a few scoobys in my time and found that the young drivers are normally on mum or dads insurance as a named driver. These young drivers have only come to my attention via complaints of boy racers with loud exhausts !! All I have to do is sit with the window down in the car and listen the sound of a scoob is so distinctive when going for it makes my job a lot easier.Speeding in towns is a big NoNo in my book espesially when they have scared some poor old granny nearly to death !

I would not consider ebay to be "black market". As Grant says, I'd consider chappy in the pub to be.
I know many who have purchased all sorts of impreza parts from ebay, yes, you do sometimes thing are they nicked, but in reality, if they turn up, and they are in good condition, do you really care? I think that most of us would not.
Yes, it's sad that somone has to fork out to get replacement items, but it's not a perfect world, and crime does occur.
If I was worried about the parts I wanted being legitimate, and I did not want to pay dealer prices, I'd phone up Grade-A and get a set. Simple.\
I'm probably missing the point here, but then again, what's new

I just hope this thread does not try to imply that all MY93 WRXs are driven by uninsured drivers who are about to nick a facelifted front end.....
I'm sure it's not just pre-facelift cars that need new lights/grilles, given the number of prangs people seem to have.
I guess a lot of stolen lights are taken by people who know that there's a market for them....only real dumb people would steal them and then put them on their own car?

i'm not sure what can be done about people nicking bits off cars, I do know though as a what you would call "young" i was 23 when in got my subaru and i'm 25 now, i would have saved nearly £4300 by not insuring it, i've been stopped one in this time, so would have probably forked out £150 and got 6 points, seems like the law isn't helping????
ps i'm sure someone will correct me on the cost of the fine for not having insurance, but it wouldn't be as much as my premiums

even the cheapest wrxs are around the 3.5-4 grand mark surely no chav is gonna want to spend that much on something they r prob gonna write off i pay nearly 1700 a year 3rd party t+t im only 23 id never drive mine without insurance. must admit the fine system is crap at punishing uninsured drivers how many times would u have to get caught before your fines totalled 1700 squid

I understand that the comments made about under 30yo WRX drivers should be taken in context with those referring to the poll on insurance, but the way it is worded does still infer to me that the consensus of opinion is that we are all Law-dodging chavs.
I am 26 and i have very recently taken delivery of my immaculate low mileage '94 WRX, admittedly the only mod it has is a louder exhaust but as its a Super Drager that is more performance orientated than for sitting in a car park screaming "My cars louder than your car" at some one in a modded 1.1 Saxo.
I worked hard to pay cash for this car and for my insurance. I pay just over £700 a year for my Gf and I to be fully comp on this car, the insurance also covers me on any other car and only has an excess of £150. So deals are out there if you look.
To make a sweeping generalisation like that is quite offensive. Its more liable that an under 25 will find it hard to get insured and consider driving without insurance, but even a statement like that would be grossly unfair. There are law breakers amongst every community and age group. I personally know a 51yo man who doesn't insure either of his cars or his van and will argue black and blue that he is in the right and a 23yo who works every hour god sends to insure his little runaround.
I just thought i ought to to say a few words on behalf of the honest under 30's.
Tony.

I'm 21, bought my scoob about a year and a half ago. I live in S.Wales, but in uni in birmingham.
I was paying £1800 my own name fully comp before i turned 21, now paying around £1400 mark.
BUT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW THE WORST BIT !!
Because i live everyday of the year in brum as been on placement since july, besides 25days + wkends + i cant bring my car up here cos of the theiving little scrouts, i pay my insurance to drive it only twice every 2 months when i get to go home !!!
But at the end of the day sod it !!! I LOVE THE THING !!! your only young once !!!
Young people do get hard done by, cos yeah agreed that we arent as experienced behind the wheel and the whole CHAV scenario gives us a bad name. I would have thought that most under 30's like myself, hate the chavs as much as anyone else, cos we get pestered more than anyone!!!
But the biggest reason is because we have to pay higher insurance costs, i would say that 9/10 we are more careful not to make mistakes, cos if we lost our no claims we wouldnt be able to afford another one !!!
+ nothing is worth even risking your no claims when you are younger - TO PUT IT SIMPLY THEY ARE LIKE GOLD DUST !!!

There was a very honest response to the previous thread with its private poll.
To myself, the results were shocking and disturbing.
