Default 'S' REG ???

What is a UK98/'S' REG Impreza Turbo?
Is that a classic Impreza MY98 (which originally had
211 PS/290 Nm), thus a MY98 UK/Euro Spec Impreza
Turbo?
What does 'S' REG mean?

I'm from the Netherlands, so that's why I was wondering (-;

Cheers!

S reg means that it was registered sometime between August 98 and August 99. It is probably a 98MY but could equally be a MY97. MY98 got the better interior with white dials and momo wheel.

That's what I wanted to know!

One other question:
My 98MY Turbo has an alarm installed and has NO airbags.
Would replacing the standard ECU by a Prodrive MY97/98
ECU cause any problems?

Cheers!

I would say that if it doesnt have air bags then perhaps it is not a euro spec car. It should have at least a steering wheel airbag. The alarm is standard Subaru? i.e. infra red plipper? Sounds like your car could be a jap import.
If it is then Prodrive ECU wont work, if it isnt then ECU should work but I believe (Dont know for sure - do a search) that on MY97+MY98 if immobilser in key then keys need to be programmed to ECU.

Thanks for your reply M8!

Car isn't a Jap import but a dutch (LHD) car, very much similar
to the UK Terzo (211 PS/290 Nm). It has a Nardi steering wheel
without airbag and the alarm was installed after 1st delivery of
the car by a 3rd party.

Don't think the Prodrive ECU will be a problem, but you might be
right about the "immobiliser in key" issue.

Do the immobiliser and the alarm work together in any way?

No, the alarm and key will be seperate immobilser systems. Best way is just to pop the ECU in and see what happens. Casing is likely to be mirrored (i.e. constructed for a RHD car ) though, if it was destined for a uk car. Most times you can take the board out of the RHD casing and put in the LHD casing. Dont know if that will be a problem. Best get some pics and have a look. I think i am slowly understanding what you are doing now!

Thanks for your information and tips!
I think I can quite safely go for the ECU that's been offered to me

Cheers!

Mmmm yeah.....

I'll just wait for some pics to be sent to me.

If it turns out to be a '3 plug' ECU, then it'll fit my MY98
(211 PS) car. If it's '4 plug' (MY99/00) I won't be able to
use it.

Thanks for the confusion!

Sorry Ruudv, Brun is nearly right. S reg could be late registered MY97 or MY 98 or MY99. However, as you have no air bags then it has to be MY97 or MY98. If your front bumper has two slots on the side then is MY97 or MY98. If you have white instruments then it is MY98. If you have 1 slot bumper with orange wedges then it is MY99.

I believe the question that should have been asked is " Will a UK98 PPP ECU fit mt LHD euro car of 1998 origin"

As the original question asked about a UK98 car which suggests it was registered in 1998, then it could only be a MY97 or MY98 as MY99 was not available until Feb/March 99 when the first cars arrived from Japan.

I trust this clarifies my answers.

Bear in mind though cosmetics could be changed. My MY98 has MY00 bumper and grille and hence looks from the outside like a late classic at a glance. MY99 will also have the crystal headlights and foglights. Can also be swapped but less likely to have been done due to cost.

MY99 onwards also have the 4 pot brakes on the front with "subaru" on them, but again these can be directly fitted to MY98. MY98 and earlier only have 2 pots.

MY99 onwards has the dump valve built on to the front right corner of the intercooler, MY98 the dump valve is mounted in pipework on the right of the intercooler.

This info is for UK, not sure about "Euro" models.

A UK spec MY98 PPP ECU also has some integration with the immobiliser and will need to be coded to your keys (if the same as UK) for it to work. In this case you will find that you have to have access to a select monitor (scooby dealer or specialist) who can reprogramme the ECU to match the ECU/Key combination. I speak from personal experience here as this is what I had to do when I fitted my MY98 with a PPP ECU. Car will start on fitting of ECU, but will stall almost instantly (1-2 seconds) and the check engine light will flash. The immobiliser unit fails to start the fuel pump due to the "incorrect" key being used to start the car.

Took the car to the local dealer, swapped ECU in the car park, then they did the bit with the select monitor and off I drove. Took about 10 minutes and cost £15. Result, full PPP installation for about £550

Thanks again for the replies!

The seller promised to send some pics of the ECU to me.
The case should have a pink-ish label with "STi" on it and
the connector should be 3-PLUG.

If that's the case, I should be able to installl the ECU in
my 98MY Turbo (after having gone to someone with a
Select monitor to record the keycode in the ECU, of
course )

Thanks again!

Wink

I've got an S plater, first registered in September 98. I BEIEVE that the S plate only lasted 6 months as wasn't that the year they started the twice yearly crap?

Anyhow, mine is a UK car, has TWO airbags, a Momo steering wheel, white instrument faces, three slot bumper, and HAD 16" wheels and a low spoiler.

Alcazar
PS: It also HAD 211bhp, but is now nearer to 300.

Alcazar i believe you are right. Cause I ordered my MY99 for March 99 on a T but ended up having to buy an RB5 in May 99 cause my car still hadnt turned up. Therefore, S reg is August 98 until March 99. Bloomin eck, how you forget things! look here for full story: http://www.personallyyours.co.uk/info/default.htm click on car numbers and car registrations link.
