Default Running in a new engine

Gulp, this is my 666th post so hope that this isn't jinxed....

I've just got my car back with new engine - short motor - and wondered what the rules are for the sensible and safe running in are? It's standard Castrol RS oil and was told not to red line it but before the next 1,000 service average driving is ok. I'm in it for the mega miles so must make sure it lasts!

I'm going to make sure I keep under 4,000 rpm for the next 1,000 and not labour it, drive mostly A and B roads to keep the revs varied. I was told that as it's not running in oil over 4k is fine as long as I'm not hammering it! Should I be slowly building up the revs and after the 1k service should I be taking it easy for another 1,000?

Also, I'm decat on the down pipe and centre section. Do I really need to get it mapped (run on Optimax or Esso SUL) and if so, should I wait a few k's first?

Blooming smelly it is though at the moment!

Cheers!

Mike

Thanks Carl! The mechanic did an 8 mile test drive so hope that he did as suggested - I will double check which oil was used and will try and get the first oil change pronto.
