Why no diesel Scoob??
Why?? Its got a turbo ready and waiting. Think about all the low down torque you would get.
So wht have'nt Subaru produced one??
Sorry if this is SIAL or if it has been posted before.

Would there be a market for one?
The Impreza can be forgiven many faults because it is quick and handles well with a good scope for further performance. That is what makes cars of this genre.
Personally I just don't think a diesel would be a wise move for Subaru. Look at it this way how many non-turbo Impreza's do you see on the roads?

Interesting question.
If Subaru could achieve the same as BMW has with it's 3 series diesel cars then I think they could be onto a winner, however, I think it's unlikley they will.
The engine would probably not be a flat four (never heard of a flat four oil burner before) and the boxer engine is one of the nice unique things about the impreza.
As for non turbo cars on the road. In the UK, ok, not that many, but in North America, quite a lot! they only got turbo WRX in 2001/2002, prior to that (and even now) you could only get a NA 2.5l car. So there is/was a market for a NA version of the car.

If you get the low down torque of a diesel, yet the extreme power when you want it, coupled with better economy - I'd be tempted... so long as it still sounds like a scooby - which might be the problem?
