The post from passionford.

Bit of a strange one this

was heading into london late last night to work and was heading up this hill when a subaru imprezza steamed past me, he was certainly shifting and i was doing about 40mph.

he must of been about 150 metres in front of me when it seemed unbelievable, the car just seemed to loose control, the rear end flicked out sideways and i saw his brakes come on, within seconds the car was ploughing sideways into a concrette lamp post at what must have been in the region of 50mph. and it hit the car dead centre of the drivers door.

i couldnt believe it, i was stopped within seconds, van blocking the road etc with orange beacons flashing away and was already on the phone to 999 before id even stopped moving.

When i got to the car it looked sick, the drivers door was caved in to such an extent that i cldnt really see the drivers seat, the door had pretty much snapped the dash clean in half and the door must have been inches from the gear stick, the guy had been thrown somehow across into the back of the car but his feet where still crushed up where the drivers foot well would have been, i dont know how but the only window that was completely smashed was the drivers door and the car was so bent i cldnt open any doors to get to him

the guy was completely out cold and i could see he was breathing but the extent of the blood around his head and top of his jacket was unreal, i didnt think we had that much blood!

i was banging on some house trying to get an idea of what road we were on and the old lady seemed to be more annoyed that i was disturbing her than the safety of this guy and pretty much shut the door in my face once i knew where i was (some people are unreal!)

felt like about 10 minutes had passed before any emergency services showed and my main worry was that the car was still somehow still running and there was petrol leaking everywhere.

was about an hour later that the fire brigade had eventually got the guy cut free as it was mangled so much. he was still pretty much out cold from what i saw but the paramedic said thay had managed to get some response form him as they cut him out.

stupid thing is that i still have no idea who this guy was, if anyone happens to be the friend of this guy who crashed at about 11:35pm last night just outside coulsdon heading towards wallington then please forward my reagrds to the guy and wish him well... and please let me know how he comes along!!

Sad indeed, but people need to control their speeds. Yes scoobs give us a sudeen urge to put our foot down here and there but we still need to be aware of the conditions, surroundings and think of your own as well as other peoples saftey first.

Maybe he had a blow out?

Would not judge him too much as it can happen to any of us. Glad it was not me though and thoughts to the driver whoever he may be - I am not judging him as a bad driver. Who knows the circumstances?

As I posted on PF.

It doesn't matter how good you are (or think you are) things can go bad. We've all been there where things have got a little out of shape

If anyone does find out who the guy was let me know....as the bloke who was there and who put the post on Passion Ford is a friend of mine, and he'd like to know if the guy in the accident is ok.

Many thanks

Sounds bad, hope the guy pulls through OK.
You mentioned the engine still running and petrol about. First thing to do, if safe, is always to turn the ignition off, even if the engine is stopped, plus any lights, radio etc, if still on. Anything could cause a spark and...............BOOM.
After that, make sure he's still breathing and try to stop any severe bleeding.

My thoughts go out to the driver and any family that he has. I'm a firefighter and have seen some pretty bad crashes but that sounds aweful.

Hi, my first post here!

It was myself that was at the scene of the accident and yes im aware of the usual turn the engine off requirements etc but it can prove hard to get to the ignition to turn the key if the dash is making love to the insides of the drivers door, i couldnt even see most the steering wheel let alone the steering column!

its kind of hard to directly desribe the car but if you had seen it from an ariel view the lamp post was where the drivers seat should be.... a tad messy!

refering to statements etc... i was asked to give a statement to pretty much every officer that arrived and i was there until the guy had been taken away to hospital, even then i must have walked the road about a dozen times with the leading investigation officer as he tried to draw a picture in his own mind of what had happened.

i dont mean to try and compare but it was only a year ago i was in a similar situation after i rolled my escort cossie and was catapulted thru the sunroof and ende up with the car across my head and sunroof imbedded in my chest and stomach.... the other nite seemed to refresh that again in my mind so in some ways i may be in shock but i cldnt just drive off and leave the guy, i appreciated the fact that someone stopped for me and maybe its having been in that situation i felt scared for the guy.

im hoping he was knocked clean out cold so he didnt feel to much pain from it all and i trully hope hes doing well 24hrs on after the event!

narrowing it down a bit further... the accident happened at 11:35 tuesday evening on woodcote grove road in coulsdon, surrey if anyone knows of the guy!

Regards to all that know him!

Give the police a ring, I'm sure they'll give you some info since you gave them a statement.

Backing up what King Eric said...

I'm not sure of the exact procedure or protocol here but I called a crash in to the Police about 6 months ago.

When they contacted me a day later to ask for a statement (I didn't see what happened just happened to be quickest to the mobile) they informed me that one of the drivers involved had sadly died. Sooooo, hopefully if you haven't been told that by the Police then the guy is doing ok. Fingers crossed.

Still, best of luck to him and good on you for your actions.

Lets all learn a bit from this guys. This could happen to anyone in the right circumstances. Even those sitting there thinking "nah, I know what I'm doing I'd catch it in time".

Exclamation

I know that strech of road, its a hilly main road with dips and crests that sweeps and bends through suburbia - theres countless residential road junctions joining it - its a well known blackspot, to the point that there is a 20 mph limit section with a justified camera there.

I hope the driver is OK, and Kelvin, not everyone can react to a scene as calmly and responsibly as you described

yes mate, the car was silver/grey.

not to clued up with scooby spec's so i darent even guess what model it was as im bound to get it wrong.

if you know the road it happened coming from coulsdon, as you climb the first hill you go over the railway and theres a couple of side roads on the left, the car went out of shape just before howard road and ended up against a concrete lamp post on the right hand side of the road about 50 metres further on. u can tell where as its now the only lamp post that doesnt work and theres alot of bricks etc across the drive-way of the house it ended up outside of!
