std motor, not in mint nick as it seems that even though its around 10 years old the really clean motors still demand a higher price. 5k upwards Id suggest, there are plenty of motors around in your budget but they wont be the best... at the end of the day u get what you pay for and 3-4k on a car like the impreza you'd be hard pushed to find 1 without its problems, Id spend as much as you can afford to, to get the best from your budget...

3-5 k should get you a wrx wagon easy peasy - theres tonnes about now so take a look at at least three cos like mentioned there are good uns and bad uns. Youll drop on a nice one if you look properly.
In my opinion its a buyers market for this type of motor so haggle

im going to look at a wrx wagon tommorow, its a my 95 wrx, good service history, 6 months mot, no tax, blitz nur spec, with hks induction, 45k miles, he wants £3500 no offers. i meeting him at scoobyclinic adam is checking it out for me. if i buy it ile have to spend £780 instantly, on a cat 1 alarm/immobiliser and a tracker and tax. ive found a place that will fit me a tracker with vat at £233 plus the £108 annual fee. not to bad.

Make sure that it's a tracker system that your insurance company is happy with.
