My MY00 wagon goes this weekend ... I've looked long and hard, test driven various 'alternatives' and still can't find anything that's as quick, safe (wife feels very safe with 4WD up here in Aberdeen), enjoyable to drive, as stealthy as a Scooby Wagon .... and puts a smile on my face as much for about 20K than a scoob .. so I pick up my MY05 Scooby Wagon tomorrow ...

Just to give some of you and some newbies some idea of the costs of an MY00 in 3 years of ownership.

First off the servicing costs ..
22.5K - £241 (including boost gauge fitting)
30K - £413
37.5 - £136
45K - £211
52.5 - £509 (including front discs/pads)

The additional expenses I didn't really need but made the car look much better and much more liveable .. anyway if I hadn't been able to buy bits/do things I may have got bored and bought another car (this one the wife believes ). Some of these are rough 'guesstimates' as I haven't kept all the docs ..

Grand total = £11368 .... holy holy mother of god ..... what makes this worse is that the Scoob has been the most reliable car ever ... OK a transfer box bearing needed replaced but apart from that it's what most UK classic scoob owners who do approx 12K a year and are happy to use dealers will face.

Feel a bit sad though as 'Hamish' has never failed to start or take me and the family anywhere. He's fast, secure, ploughs through snow, rain .. I've had umpteen fridge/freezers in the back and washing machines with the seats down .. it's the car my daughter came home in (she can recognize a Scoob now at 2 1/2 ).

I'm going to miss my little DBM pal ... he was needing replaced and the 3 yr free servicing with the new MY05 will hopefully make finances a little easier. I'm hoping that someone will buy him that treats him with the same car I did ..

P.S. He's only a car but I put my last £20 quid in him the last day knowing he was going, I knew it was the last time so had decided just to splash in some supermarket 95, enough to get me through the last few days and down to the dealer but do you know what ... I just couldn't do it, he got Optimax as normal

Not entirely sure what a transfer box bearing does .. did ask in here in technical but no response. Symptoms were a high pitched whine, like transmission whine that changed in tone with speed (not revs) .. most noticable coasting down from 40-20 in 3rd ... mechanic said it was usually louder (mine was quiet-ish but noticeable) . Happened in all gears, didn't disappear when brakes applied.

Supposedly a 'known' weakness in MY00 boxes.

Actually forgot to add road tax to above history .. so another 500-odd quid.

Just worked out that £11K over 3 years or so is about £315 quid a month

Also if I add the loan I took to buy the car (approx 7K) and paid about £190 a month until I had a wee bonus that paid it .. you are looking at £500 odd sobs a month ... jesus

Plus you forgot to factor in the depreciation which is the biggest cost in owning a car for most people.

I worked out that my Impreza cost me £700 a month for the 22 months I owned it. Can you see why I drive a £1500 Renault Laguna now??

That is a lot of money!!, personally I'd prefer to drive a **** box around and take the family on 2 or 3 good holidays each year.
Definitely food for thought for any newbies out there contemplating Impreza ownership though.

Yep deffo a lot of wonga .. although it's not until I totalled it up I realized just how much it has cost me .. I mean I knew it was quite expensive but holy cow

We've still had nice holiday, the nipper is wee so we've toured Scotland on our hols like I did when I was just a lad. I'd never spend cash on a car if it meant that the family missed out on anything .. the missus is still on first name terms with all the employees at all the branches of NEXT

At least my new one has free servicing, won't cost me anything to tax for a year, shouldn't need tyres/pads/discs for a couple of years and anything else going wrong is covered by warranty ... just insurance and petrol to pay and in the grand scheme of things wont be that much more than a pleb-mobile per month

Thought I'd post up just to give some folks an idea of just how much a classic is to run if they are considering one. I mean buying one is only half (if not less than) the complete picture ..

OK - sounds expensive until you look at some alternatives which seem popular. For example: BMW 5 series, Audi A4 etc. Badge or performance?

Think of all the ££ saved on initial outlay of Scoob vs. alternative.

My MY00 cost £10k (25k miles) which, by my calculation, still leaves me the £10-15k balance in the bank for running costs & fuel over the next 3-5 years.

I maintain that despite running costs the scoob represents best value (in terms of performance, safety & thrills) than anything else out there.

Alarming, isn't it? I did a similar mental calculation to worked out what my MY00 had cost up until I sold it at 4 1/2 yrs old. I thougt about what it cost to buy (£23k), all the servicing, Prodrive toys, tyres, fuel, insurance and one nice shiny new engine - and nearly cried as I parted with the whole lot for the princely sum of £8,900.

I didn't learn, though. With luck I should be picking up a brand spanking new Japanese MY05 STI next weekend

what did you have done on the 60k service? nearly a grand.
was it work you were expecting to pay for, or was it a case of walking to the service counter and then nearly passing out?

hoskib - an MY00 for a 60K at a main dealer is £750 as it includes spark plugs and cambelt all in one

I needed cambelt tensioners as well and some bushes and springs for the clutch assembly ... hence the total.

They quoted me £750 for the service and £150 odd for other parts etc + labour so I was actually expecting about £1200, you should have seen the receptionists face when she said £996 and I said .. oh cool cheaper than I thought
