Default Odd sounds from the roof?

I have a 03 WRX and while out tonight, whenever I went about about 40mph I heard a strange pattering sound that seemed to come from the roof, a bit like branches tapping against the metal.

It only happened when I was moving so it could be the wind blowing something, it wasn't affected by vibration.

Any ideas?

Gary.

now corrected.

Anyway, listening to the noise again this morning it could be coming from behind the dash. I had some security stuff installed recently and I bet the grommet in the bulkhead hasn't been sealed properly.

I think it's most likely to be an infestation of Edible Dormice. Have you noticed any loose corners of interior trim? A giveaway sign is a polished patina to the material as they rub against it during their ingress and egress from the roofspace. You may find some small grey hairs, too.

Or in reference to a recent episode of coronation street - it could be the grey squirrel storing nut for the upcoming winter.

I have the same noise in my 01MY - eventually tracked it down to the radio aerial. If it is not fully extended, the bottom of the rod taps against the inside of the windscreen frame at low speeds - once you get up to speed, the forces pin it permenantly against the metal - hence no tapping.

Can't remember if the 03MY has an external aerial, but if it has, it might be the solution

Regards

Thanks for the one useful reply Fox, it's a good idea but the 03 has an internal aerial built into the demister... however it could be a mobile aerial I've recently had fitted.
