POLL: Trackdays or Dragstrips??
What does it for you?
I was at Silverstone Trax yesterday and although I had a great time it wasnt a buzz in the same way as Santa Pod. My main concern was getting around without incident (which I did). Also managed to go around reasonably quick but due to the amount of concentration it wasnt really a buzz. Also its non competitive.
In contrast at Santa Pod I could give it 100% and it was competitive (ie head-to-head. Drag racing was an ultimate buzz for me, but which do you perfer?

It's the constant application of concentration that I enjoy. Starting the day learning each corner, getting progressively faster until your peak and then maintaining consistency lap after lap. The damage caused by dragging puts me right off the idea of using my own car, whereas on track you can drive smoothly to the limits of the car without damaging anything but tyres (unless you rag it sideways all the time, but those people aren't very good). I guess I have a longer attention span than 12 seconds as I can quite happily lap a track from dawn to dusk. I'm usually bored to tears by lunchtime watching drag racing.

Trackdays for me done a few and it's seems to me that there is a lot you can learn from them about the handling characteristics of a car.
Dragstrips are fun there is no doubt but theres only so much you can do even my missus could get a car to go quick in a straight line.....eventually ermmm possibly then

wow. I'm in the minority it would seem. I did enjoy an airfield day a few years ago when I first got the scoob, moreso than Silverstone. Maybe because on the airfield day there was generally only one car out at a time, and nothing to hit apart from tyres Only had a 15minutes session (or whatever it was) at silverstone.
Still cant beat the buzz of revving it up and letting rip against the guy (or lass) next to you.....for me anyway.

The competition element is very important and completely changes the day - much more of a buzz, much more adrenalin
However I like the challenge of a course with bends in it - sure that getting a good quarter is very technical but doesn't ring my bell either
Thats why I do neither - and go sprinting
Oh looky here's one I prepared earlier

Definately track days. Going down the strip isnt very exciting for me. Having to work and concentrate hard for 20-30 minutes in one go and pushing the car to its very limits going faster and faster lap after lap gives me a serious buzz.
Chasing, catching and getting past faster and more exspensive machinery is hugely satisfying, much more so than a few seconds down a straight piece of tarmac

Never done a drag event, but I will be doing one next month at the pod. However, I have done a few trackdays at castle combe and I did Trax at Silverstone, and I find it an amazing experience, a total buzz. Maybe people who don't find it that exciting aren't really pushing thier car on track? For me taking your car right up to it's limits of grip, and sometimes beyond, is just a fantastic experience. When you are going at it hard on track, concentrating on every bend, feeling what the car is doing, correcting slides etc., it's just such a rush to me. I just dont think driving in a straight line for 1/4 mile will do it for me, but I may be proved wrong next month.

Totally agree that Trackdays don't give the buzz because there's no competition involved. But equally driving in a straight line doesn't do it for me either.
So that just leaves sprints and hillclimbs, proper competition without the risk of some muppet in front of you throwing his car into yours. Fantastic!

I was going to post some sort of rude comment about the person who put "neither".
Then i clicked on it and saw it was me.
Not sure how that happened, i must have missed "trackdays"

I don't get the point of drag strips in a road car. What is the difference between that and some traffic lights on a dual carriageway?
Track days however allow you to do stuff that you can't do on the public road, like actually find out what your car will do and what you are capable of.
BTW, I have never been to a competitive trackday and that is not what they are about. They are about you and your own car pushing your own limits.
It will also do a scooby less damage than trying to launch it at a drag strip.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The track days I go to definately have a competitive element. There are plenty of people who are just out to drive their car at a speed they are confortable with but then there are always some who wants to have a go and its fun chasing equal and faster machinery when both you and the other drivers are giving it beans

Trackdays are great but the cost of a days fun is too prohibitive for me to do it regularly, ultimate buzz is the Nurburgring but again cost and time off work means its an occasional thing nowadays
Did get a buzz from 1/4 mile'ing but my car isnt really set up for it (ratios too close)
Soooo - autotests and pct's from a competetive aspect - rallying from the navigators seat and looking at sprinting and hillclimbing next season
