Angry Haynes Manual

I see that Haynes are not willing to publish a manual for 2000 reg cars onwards 'because not enough of them are around!"

I beg to differ, so would a bit of lobbying from us all help them to change their mind?

Give us an Email address and we will do so (I have a good record of making companies listen to my emails, oh, forgot, the last one ended up with a solicitors letter)

My email to Haynes on 09/11/03:

Have you any plans for producing a manual for this car yet, surely there must be enough out there by now to warrant the expenditure !

Their reply back on 10/09/03:

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your vehicle, unfortunately we do not produce a Service & Repair manual for your vehicle and regret have no plans to do so within the foreseeable future (6-8 months).

However, all customer requests are recorded and used in the decision making process of future manual publications/updates. I realise that this may be of little help to you at present, but I can assure you that your request has not been ignored.

Sorry we could not be of further assistance in this instance, assuring you of our best intentions at all times.

If you need any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Assuring you of our best attention at all times.

Kind regards

Thumbs up

I've just sent them my email explaining how the market has been flooded with imports over the last 12 months and how many of us there are now that need a manual!

You should all do the same!!

In case Emma Parsons doesn't work for Haynes any more, use this email address that I got off of their web site this evening:

What if someone asks them how many people they would need to have interested in order to write a manual and we organise lists on SN, SIDC, Scoobycity etc. of all those people that want a manual?

There are 42,315 members on SN alone:

42,315 x £15 = £634,725!

surely Haynes would be interested in publishing a manual for that amount!?

I expect the Legacy has a similar one but, apparently, there are loads of different types.

Same here - I've got a couple of different ones but they really don't give you as much info and detail as the Haynes manuals do.

They're good for telling me which button on the dashboard to press to switch the A/C on or for showing me what a cylinder head looks like ...... but nothing that says "here's a step-by-step guide with photos on how to change a clutch or gearbox"!

Got a reply from a Kerry O'Donnell at Haynes today (KODonnell@haynes.co.uk). Here's what she said:

"Unfortunately we do not currently produce a Manual for your vehicle. On average we produce 8 new and 8 updated Car Service and Repair Manuals per year along with approximately 5 new and 5 updated Motorcycle Service & Repair Manuals.

When looking at our publishing programme for the forthcoming year we take into consideration new car registrations both in the UK and abroad, Trade and private customer requests and the vehicle model. (Some models/makes are simply not ‘DIY’ compatible.)

Under normal circumstances we consider covering models that are 3 years old and whose sales have exceeded 50,000 units.

We are currently logging the amount of requests we have for the Subaru Impreza and this will be taken into consideration when the publishing programme is next under review."

How about something along the lines of this ..........?

Dear Kerry,

I wish to notify you of my interest in purchasing a workshop manual for a Subaru Impreza should you choose to publish one.

I understand that one of the key factors in your decision to write a manual for any particular model is the volume of sales. In case you are not already aware, I would like to advise you that a significant percentage of Subaru Imprezas in the UK today are actually imported as used WRX and STi models from Japan. Therefore, there is much more of a market for a workshop manual than the UK sales figures would suggest.

The Subaru Impreza is, indeed, quite a specialist car. However, the majority of Impreza owners are keen performance car enthusiasts and this, coupled with the high cost of having these vehicles maintained by dealers, means that many owners would prefer to do their own maintenance if there were a suitable workshop manual available to which they could refer.

I would be grateful if you would track this request in order to assist your decision making process. The particular model year that I am most interested in is 1996.

Many thanks,

Your Name.
Your email address.

Just received this from Matthew Minter, Editorial Director:

"We know that there is a lot of pent-up demand for a manual among Impreza owners; we also know that there are a lot more on the road than the official UK figures suggest (just over 43,000 according to the SMMT). The Impreza has been on our shortlist for a couple of years now. I have no doubt that we will produce a manual sooner or later, but I can't say when. My colleagues in Sales have to produce some worthwhile forecasts first!

We record every request for manuals not yet published and take these into account when deciding our forward programme, so your effort has not been wasted. Thank you for taking the trouble to contact us on this matter."
