Default STI 8 Gearbox on a classic RB5 completed

Hi Guys,

Thought i'd inform you that putting an STI 8 six speed box on a classic is achievable. I have a 1999 RB5. After a TSL engine rebuild I managed to break 2 gearboxes in 3 weeks so after a chat with Oli and Matt Clark from Roger Clark motorsport at Elvington I decided to go for the six speed conversion. RCM had never attempted this and were keen to do so.
I sourced a gearbox and linkage from a UK spec STI 8 with 3500 miles on for £1600 in vat and delivery. (it has to be a UK spec STI 8 or you need to change the rear diff aswell).
You need to get a prop shaft from an Automatic as its 60mm shorter.
whilst they had the gearbox off I decided to go for the lightweight flywheel that RCM offer. Its a doddle they said. It took them a day. They charged me £881 inc vat, flywheel Oil and a brand new gear ****.
Matt / Oli if your reading this its a job very well done and I can't thankyou enough.

As for the results its awesome!!!

Have you driven the car with new box yet?

I've gone from a WrRB5 to an O3 STi and think the gearing is appalling

it makes the car way too buzzy thro the first 4 gears and 6th is nigh on useless below 100mph..combine that with a gear change throw longer than most small lorries....

I passionately hate mine

Congratulations on a nice graft

I believe Simon Lines (Prodrive) has a Classic with 6 speed box IIRC and was discussing the Gear ratio's he mentioned using the JDM ratio's and UK 6th for Motorway cruising. 5&6th are one piece and was considering having some made

I love it. The car has had a major engine build with all steel internals group A down pipe and Equal length headers so its kicking out around 300bhp whilst I admit its quick through the gears I actually like that. As for the long throw I dont believe its any different from the RB5's quickshift. The sticks i little higher but overall I prefer it. And to say I have driven it is an understatement there's some nice twisty B roads near me...enough said lol. AS for sixth mine seams ok but then I have had all the engine work done, its lighter than the 03 sti too. Fourth is by far my favourite, a nice cruising gear and you don't have to change down to clear off.
The overall spec of the car is as follows:
STI 9 Tuftrided, Niterided Cross drilled Crank:
JE Forged Pistons (first oversize)
Carillo Steel Rods
Heads Polished flowed and ported
Cylinder block Over bored
Modified Oil feed Uprated Oil Pump with oil pressure release valve,
AP racing Clutch,
TSL Equal length header pipe
Group A Down Pipe (3 inch)
TSL decat centre section
TSL Firestorm back box.
Greens / TSL Panel Filter.
Turbo smart BOV
1.2mm Head gaskets
ARP Rod bolts
WRC lead copper bearings
WRC head Bolts
Sabelt four point Harnesses
Ecutek Remap by Richard Bulmer from TSL
Roger Clark Lightweight Flywheel
STI 8 6 Speed gearbox
A-Tech Ultralite 18 wheels show with Toyo proxes T1-S 215 /35 tyres

So overall its a huge success

Sorry but I don't recognise this description at all??
My JDM 03 STi pulls strongly from around 60MPH in 6th and the throw is 80mm that's just over 3 inches, not a long throw in my book.

I understand that JDM cars have shorter 5th and 6th gears than UK, so that might explain it - although I've no problem at all with a tall top gear for quiet cruising.

To suggest that the gearshift has a long throw is ridiculous, though, the 6 speed box is short and precise IMHO.

The UK have 5th and 6th overdrive.

The 6 speed has been fitted in many classics now! P20SPD, David Wallis were one of the first to do it. Now Money has, I have in my classic and a few other people!

If you go for the Jap box you need a different diff.

Prop can be the exact one of the car newage doesnt have to be a classic auto. Also the throw can be shorten by using prodrive short shift.

I have it on mine and pulls hard on my STI8 and the classic in 5th and 6th both using UK boxes.

350bhp on the STI8 and prob circa 400bhp on the classic at the moment.

well perhaps i have a fault with mine then...but I don't find it as short and precise as my RB5's

it's also extremely notchy and takes an age to actually shift between gears,I dread to think what that does for its 0-60 time

Is that just because the Jap box is designed to mate with the DCCD centre diff?

I must admit the throw on my standard 53 plate STi is a bit long when compared to my Celica GT4. Does feel a bit truck like after the toyota shift, but its no slower and I find the ratios fine.
