Default 60K service on a classic Impreza - is it really £400!?

Just called my local (local as in 2 hours away!) Subaru dealer for a price for 60K service and they quoted £400. I was initially told it would be a cambelt change but the car had the belt changed at 45K (its an MY00 btw). However without the cambelt change it was still going to cost £400.

What am I paying £400 for? Engine and transmission oil replacement? I did that last month. New Plugs? changed them with the oil. Disc and pad inspection? changed them 2 months ago.

Only thing they mentioned that I haven't done is the fuel filter and check things like hoses, UJ boots etc. Hardly £400 worth of work IMHO.

Looks like I'll be using my more local Subaru specialist for the job. Shame it'll lose its full dealer history but I'm not paying £400 for that little work. Plus this issue of blown engines just after dealer service - if I **** up the service and I blow it up at least I'm £400 to the better to pay for the repairs.

rant over me thinks!

It's £400 if you go to a main dealer m8.

I got a 60k service and the rear pads and disks replaced for a whisker under £280.

Yeah, my 60k at a main dealer cost about £400 + whatever it was for brake pads. They knocked a little bit off that as i supplied my own oil though...

classics need the cambelt changing at 45k miles but the MY00 are 60k. is that right???? Im sure Ive heard this before, maybe you made a mistake getting it done at 45k and now theyre trying to dupe you for it again.

either way why pay over the odds for a dealer history when the amount of money you would save going to a specialist (just as good imo) would be more than what you'd lose on the resale value.....

No - thats not right (the 45/30k bit on a 00)

00 is a classic - cam belt at 45/90 etc.

The 60 k is really a 2*30, which is oils, brake fluid, radiator drain etc. I just paid 400 at TSL, but that included some off, as I changed the plugs myself and have an induction kit, so no air filter needed.

The REAL biggy is 90K, which is 3*30 + 2*45 !!!! (700 quid plus !!!!!!!)

I'd say 400 quid is pretty OK for a dealer-

Ok it wasnt right but my point is still right if they are charging u 60k for the second cambelt but theres no need for that if it was done at 45k.

Also TSL seem to be overpriced compared to alot of other specialists such as scoobyclinic so there shouldnt be much comparison with a dealer and TSL anyhow?

You don't have to get the cambelt done - I didn't although my service book said it had been done at 45k.

My service turned out to be around £540 but I needed a new Lambda sensor fitted too. AFAIK the 60K services includes all fluids changed - oil, gear oil, transmission, brake fluid etc...

Sorry Dave, no offence intended - only 'quick read' the original post - serves me right !

There should be no cambelt change at 60K - and TSL are around the same price as a main dealer - I'm simply saying that 400 quid is the right price for a dealer quote....

However, I'll also add that I had a quote from a main dealer for the 90K, just to get an idea - they originally said - its a minor service, around 300 quid. Then they phoned back and said 'We're wrong, its quite big - around 500 - we'll confirm tomorrow'. The next day the came back and said 'its 750 - !'

Certainly worth getting a quote from a local specialist - scoobyclinic seem to have a very good rep. Personally, I always use TSL for services, though they are more money than some - I just happen to like them and their work.

I think that once you've found somewhere you trust, its worth a lot.....

mark, no worries, no offence took at all, knew what you meant

Still think £400 sounds steep for a simple service, doesnt sound anything too major there, can they quote you the amount of labour time involved? should show up why it might be so expensive?

Agree with what you say there though, trust can cost alot when handing over your car keys..

My June registered MY00 turbo log book says that the cambelt should be changed at 60k miles. Maybe pre June registered MY00's are at 45k miles? I think that £400 is a relatively low price coming from a Subaru dealer, but as has alread been said you could probably get it done cheaper from a specialist garage.

just check with one of the Subaru specialsts... the dealer wanted £400 + for the 30k service on my Sti MY03... After much thought I eventualy took it to Scooby clinic... "after checking with IM that my warranty is still ok" The clinic used all subaru parts and i supplied Silkolene Pro S oil... they did a top job, took more time on the car than the dealer, checked everything! were extremly thorough.. and it was just over half the cost of the dealers...

I'd say unless dealers change the rip-off culture they'll have the service guys sat doing nothing in the next year or so, once everyone reallises you can have your vehicle serviced ata specialst without detrement, get as good if not better service and don't get ripped off!

Example I was charged £15.86 for the yellow brake fluid cap... robbing bstds...

Rant over ...

Must be better belts... NOT ! Wonder if Subaru felt that the belt would be OK for another 15K then ? Seems odd - I think I'll stick to every 45... (having just had 120000 mile one done !)

In terms of labour, you can watch TSL do the work - they started mine at 2pm and finished at around 5:30, so 3.5 hours..... - I've a breakdown of parts at home, the oils are quite pricey, as its decent stuff and 30K needs a lot (diffs, gearbox, etc), fuel filter is changed too. The plugs cost me 45 quid too - but I bought them online and did them myself (Whole OTHER story )

Is main deal service history so important though?? Surely a well know specialist is equally as good??

Well, when the girl said its a cambelt job at 60K I just politely said are you sure as it was done at 45K at Tileys in Bristol. She came back and said I've spoken to someone else and he says yes its 45K. Mines an MY00 September first registered in Dublin so its never even had Subaru warranty anyway.

So are they saying the belt should be every 30K not every 45K? And what got me most was that she quoted £400 for the belt change yet even though its been done at the 45K service the cost was still £400 (actually cas is only on 52K but I'm doing it every 6 months). Shocking really as the 52.5K was only £130 but on inspection thats £130 to change the oil

TBH I'm taking my car to a local specialist anyway. I've heard 99% good things about them and if I came to sell my car I would point out that these guys are Subaru specialists and that was good enough for me and my pride and joy.

no, what we've come to conclude is that some early MY00's and previous the cars should have the cambelt done at 45k miles...... later MY00's have them changed at 60k. probably because subaru started using a stronger belt. it sound like youve had your cambelt done at 45k (as did 90% of all the classics) when in fact it didnt actually need to be done until it got to 60k miles.... so now youve gone back for the 60k miles service and theyre trying to give u your first cambelt change without them actually knowing it'd been done.... bit of an akward 1 now.....

Subaru impreza handbook says cambelt at 60k (miles)/4 yrs
UK service book, schedule says 60k but boxes where stamps are put says 45k..
Since service book seems to cover impreza, legacy and justy, its only the justy schedule that calls for a 45k cambelt change.
So **** knows, one of thems wrong, but i believe it was only the uk that got 45k/3yr cambelt changes on impreza's.. rest was 60k / 4yrs.
mine got done at 3yrs but alot less than 45k anyway..

For MY00's cambelt change is dependent on chassis number, not when it was first registered.

If there's a Y in the chassis number then it's 60k before belts need changing, otherwise it's 45k.

so hang on a minute you do most of a service yourself yet still go and ask how much if they do it? would it not have made more sense to go in and ask for a check over and change the fuel filter yourself, seems a bit pointless really.
your out of warranty anyway so why bother with dealer servicing if your doing it at home or dare i say it defecting to so called specialists.
i can't see why your having a go at your dealer when your asking for the wrong work to be done.

Even though I've done some servicing items myself its not the same as having Subaru stamps at every service interval. It still needs a proper service of some sort even if some items have been changed and this is why I wanted to get a dealer price. Basically the way I see it I'm paying for those stamps not just for the work to be carried out.

Also I just didn't understand how I was quoted £400 irrespective of whether the cambelt was changed.

Smile Cheaper Service in Surrey !!

Hi, On the subject of service costs anyone tried

http://www.rivettautos.co.uk/2004/framesmain.asp

As they service scoobies and are in the SE.
I've been recommended them but i'm not due for a service so haven't tried them yet.

Friend with a Turbo Forestor was quote £800+ for a 45K service at the dealer in Guildford, rang the local dealer in Haslemere and he quote £100 less and will collect it from your house.

Since my warranty ran out I have decided to service my MY00 either myself [interim] or specialist [major], because I dont consider it worth paying dealer ripoff prices just to get a stamp in a book.
