This particular subject has been discussed at length before - worth searching previous posts.

My understanding is that although all fuel comes from the same refineries (and has already been rated at 95 RON), the various different oil companies then add their own additives to their own brand of petrol. The fuel you get at Shell is therefore not identical to that from say Esso or Tesco. I do not think that the additives affect RON but may improve economy and/or performance by influencing fuel burn in the engine.

I've heard of unsubstantiated rumours about engine damage with so-called inferior quality fuels. In reality, I don't think that there's much difference.

I have found that it depends upon the car to a great extent.

When I was driving Sierra's I chucked the cheapest in and all was fine.

I then got a Calibra and it didnt like the supermarket petrol at all.

Next came a Nissan Primera GT - it would drink anything without worry ... and at 40mpg it was a dream (very underrated car)

Then the Impreza - hates Esso and Supermarket loves the others and I can notice a difference - honest

My car runs primarily on Sainsburys NORMAL unleaded!!!

It still managed to show up a lot of similar cars running super, at a rolling road day!!!

I don't think it makes a huge difference on which type of normal unleaded you run. Although I've always found the car runs smoother on super!

Before people ask, I have to run normal unleaded due to a company fuel card, but at least they pay for all my petrol!!!

I agree with Andy. I've tried petrol from all suppliers, and I'm actually surprised to say that my scoob feels better with Sainsbury's than some of the branded fuel.

Until recently Sainsbury's were selling at 1 or 2p per litre MORE than the others, but if you do your weekly shopping there you get 3 or 4p discount on petrol. This suggested to me that they were buying regular supplies on the market rather than bargaining for the cheapest.

Now they've gone back to being one of the cheapest. But I still say that their petrol is no worse than anyone elses.
