Damsel in distress, could you help?
I知 looking to buy my first ever Scooby.
But being of the female persuasion I知 a little worried about being ripped off or being sold a dud!
I know what to look for bodywork wise, but as for engines, well, to be honest it all a little bit confusing!
I have around 10K to spend.
What if anything should I be looking for and what should sound the old alarm bells.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For that sort of money i would look at a 2000 model classic shape UK turbo. See if you can get one with less than 40000miles and still under the manufacturers warranty. (This would mean that the original 3 year warranty would have been extended for a further two years.)
Make sure that the service history is up to date and has been serviced by a Subaru dealer.
Car should look mint and brakes should not be rusty nor steering wheel/gear lever/seats worn or torn. (at this mileage.)
Any modifications should be declared by seller so that you can inform your insurance, but probably you just want a standard car or a version that has any PRodrive pack added. This could include the Prodrive engine performace pack or suspension pack or other.
You may find a 2001 bug eye for this sort of money and it should be considered but resale will be less and not terribly much loved by Subaru owners unless headlight conversion has been done.
Japanese imports are best avaoided if you know nothing about Subarus but have a lot to offer.
European imports will not have an official warranty but will be a bit cheaper than a uk dealer supplied car and are attractively priced - certainly NOT to be avoided.

Vilma,
Beastie's advice is good! Also have a look in the Southern section on scoobynet and see if there are any meets local to you (I see you're in London). It may be worthwhile going along to one, I'm sure other scooby owners will let you look at their cars and will be able to advise you of reputable dealers in your area.

I've got a MY00 (X plate ) UK Impreza. For 10k you should be able to get similar in good condition. The last of the classic shapes are good as you get all the extras added over the lifetime of the model, i.e. colour coded mirrors and door handles, 16 inch wheels, 4 pot brakes, decent seats and interior, STI wing etc.
Good luck, hope you find a mint one

You could have had my car if I hadn't found a buyer a couple of weeks ago already. Still, I think it's exactly the sort of car you should be looking for, maybe with slightly fewer miles as you have a few quid extra to spend.

In the classics, the only STi you'll get is a Jap import. The P1 was made to try and recoup some of the market when all the early Scoobynuts started shopping abroad for the higher performance. We didn't get an official STi 'til the "7" on the bugeye, and even then they kept us waiting with the UK300 for long enough. You should, as has been said before, be able to find a late Turbo (classic shape) or early (00/01) bugeye for that money easily enough. The bugeye is better built but the looks can be offputting, although as they age they are looking better.
Happy shopping.

The Spec C is the lightweight stripped out version of the newage STi, you also get a classic version called the RA, they are race altered (or as the spec c is known, specification competition as they dropped the RA in 2003).
Lightweight, no goodies (unless you get a limited) and quite quick (mine looks like a white wrx )

98 version 5
you would have to confirm that one, the model year would state exactly what it was (they change the model year in september/october time) but they were 99 model year cars.

If you have your heart set on an STi then dont settle for anything less. However, make sure it has a service history and that the VIN plate matches the log book. Get the chassis number and ask on Scoobynet for identification of year of build no matter what the seller tells you.
Ask what fuel it has been run on, if they say normal unleaded ask if it has been remapped. If they dont know what you are talking about walk away, the engine is likely to go pop on the way home. Remember Jap imports are designed to run on a higher grade of fuel than we have in the UK. The best we have just now is Optimax. If they say it is always run on that then should be ok. If they say its been remapped for UK fuel ask for proof and even better.
If the car has modifications then you have a lot of learning to do about available modifications and whether it is recommended for car longevity or not.
Then again if you just bimble about in the Urban Jungle that is London ,and just give it a bit of stick occasionally down the Kings Road then it should run reliably enough. If you are like some other gals on this board and are as bad as the boys i.e. Turbo Nutters then be careful what you are buying. Ask someone who knows what to look for and what they are looking at, to accompany you, there seems to be plenty of takers already!!
