Default Help please! settle this argument!

Is there or has there ever been any Impreza that can run 100% RWD straight from the factory?

And does the STI Type RA have this ability?

thanks in advance!

Thanks yes I know they are great cars. Seem to remember John Felstead saying how good they were one time.

BUT...All I want to know is can they be switched to run 100% RWD?
Its a yes or a no answer!

Yes some knobber is trying to tell me Type RA's can run RWD!

Very cool and desirable cars BUT I think the owner has been telling little porkies at some 'cruise'

Not necessarily

It is possible to have all torque go through the rear wheels, and also possible to have all torque through the front wheels on a type r

Sorry, couldn't resist.

All the best

LOL

No humble pie at all. I was just being awkward!!

As you are able to lock the centre diff on a Type R, it is possible that (for instance if you have your front wheels on ice and your rear wheels on tarmac) that you'd have 100% torque at the rear and 0 at the front.

All the best

Ah, but then, the ice would be very quickly under the rears too

Exclamation

I think you are all a bit confused here.

DCCD on Type Rs and RAs can run approx 66/34% Rear/Front torque split. Some only assume you can dial "all" torque to the rear because of the diff control wheel. if moved fully towards the rear it gives max of approx 66% torque to rear wheels allowing tail-out action (or silly donuts )
If the diff control is moved fully to the front then all 4 wheels will lock and revolve together. Good for snow/ice. It won't allow 100% front or 100% rear drive!
You can only dial in a portion of the torque towards the front or rear!

Can't be arsed to try and explain it any clearer.

And yes, I have a Type R STi6 thanks

skoobidude

You're mistaken.

An open diff delivers 50% (or whatever the torque split it is designed to produce) each way.

With a locked diff, the torque split is the same as the friction split. In other words the end with the most resistance is the end that gets the torque.

You cannot force all of the torque to be delivered to the rear wheels, or the front wheels, but with a locked diff it is absolutely possible for 100% torque to be delivered to the rear wheels, or to the front wheels, for the rest of the time the torque will be delivered at a percentage dictated by the resistance at front vs rear.

All the best

Simon
