Question

Just a thought, but has any testing been carried out into the efects of driving through the Laser beam that the police speed traps are using?

I used to work with lasers a few years ago and they were all classed depending on there hazard to the eyes.

I would have thought the lasers used on speed traps would be a faily high powered class1 laser that would damage your eyes after direct exposure.

Anyone got any info?

Unfortunately, they are all likely to be very safe...

E.g., the LTI20-20 device which can be used in the UK (info here:

bugger, thats that idea out the window LOL

Its funny though, cos all my lasers that were class1 had stickers on them saying they damage your eyes??

Maybe in the USA its a diferent class system? i would be surprised if it is though?

extract from FAQ pages

Are your laser products safe to use around people and animals? Yes! All of LTI's products are completely eyesafe. They have been tested and verified by the Food & Drug Administration as being Class 1 eyesafe and fall under the rating of CFR 21. This means that the human eye can be directly exposed to our laser energy continuously for 3 hours with no damage. They are actually less harmful than a typical flashlight and output 1/20 the power of a TV remote control!

What a strange Question John(or maybe it's me), When I first read it I had visions of the new police phaser based speed gun.

It shoots out a beam of super hot phased light than disintigrates any speeding car from around the driver. All that's left is the chassis and the driver.

If you've seen planes trains and automobiles just after the fire in the car you'll get the image i'm thinking of.

Maybe it's just 100RON lasers that do that

LOL!

Good thinking John, bad luck. Keep up the good work though

I also used to use lasers, and can only half remember all the info...

I thought though that class1 lasers are still dangerous in dark conditions if shone right into the eye.

Apparently your eye can focus on the beem and intensify it onto your retina?

Like Alistair said though, if it was dangerous, there's very little chance of them being able to use it.

Cheers

Simon
PS. Still impressed with John's lateral thinking though!
