Tonight I had a shock
... I need to talk

Can a BMW328i match an Impreza UK spec 2900mls?

Is my engine knackered? I could have bought a BMW328i Convertbl instead of the scoobie!!

Surely to god it shouldnt be able to pull a trick like that??

Talk to me!!!!!

Since a fairly standard Scoob can take most M3's, I can only presume that you were in reverse.

Pete.

I have no idea about specifications but what I do know is I have had the same problem with a particular 328i everytime I drive to work....he just does not like it when I come up behind him.
He refuses to move over (on a three lane road, with a national speed limit) very very close match although if I get on the throttle b 4 he does he has no chance!!

Why would u want to buy a car like that? what happens when u come 2 a corner!!

Josh,

I must have a problem with my Scoob. I have never been able to match a M3 in a straight line. I would like to meet a standard Scoob that would. ( Not that I like BMs but they do have an extra 100+bhp )

Was out in the Scoob last week with work, and 4 colleagues in someones 328i. Gotta say, I had a hard job keeping up with him, except at roundabouts!

Maybe my motor's duff too!!

Does depend on the weather they seem to act like total to$$ers in torrintial rain so i just leave them to it. Also was it still quite warm out coz mine tends to be noticably slower in hot weather as oppossed to cold midnight thrash

Can honestly say that I have never had a problem with them.
If you dont race no problem!!
But if needs must have always been able to pull away from them and as said when the road is anything but straight leave them dead.
Since fitting downpipe have noticed a greater increase in in gear accelaration and greater low down torque which gives that extra bit of grunt when already on the move.

I had a play with a 3 series 2.5 turbo diesel . Dont laugh they have loads of torque from 20 to 70 through the gears he stayed with me. The dual carriage spilt and we went our separate ways.

I also had a play with a T4 off a roundabout onto a national speed limit dual carriageway. Just about had the edge due to getting on the power earlier.

As someone has previous posted the scooby looks like it would destroy a 328 on paper but dont forget the transmission losses of the 4WD for bhp per ton. From a standing start the scooby should have the edge on being able to put more power down. On the move from say 20 mph on a straight road I would have thought it would be fairly close. On the twisty bits and esp in the wet goodbye beemer .

I do not believe that a 328i would ever match the Scoob in any territory with drivers of equal ability behind the wheel.
The only one's I've ever come up against have been well and truly 'Scoobied', and surprisingly they acknowledged defeat!
Not racing of course you understand, but if someone won't let you pass....
I don't believe the 330i will be much bother either, seeing as Scoobs are pretty much equal to M3's on track. At least, I've never seen one an M3 that has been much bother. There was even a new Alpina 3.3 at Donno last time, and he was so relucatant to let anyone pass it was ridiculous. It wasn't until he lost it that he finally learned some track eteiquette. Put a decent driver behind the wheel though, and I guess it could be a different story.

I used to own a 328 and UK Turbo at the same time. The 328 at points felt faster than the Scooby. As to a Scooby leaving a 328 for dead on the twisty stuff, in the dry I doubt it. I would certainly corner at the same speeds in the 328 as the Scooby. Have a wet road though and its different. Later model UK Turbos seem to very tight engines. 2900mls and it still needs a load more to losen up.

A std UK car will not keep up with an M3. Tried a couple of times on and off track. They just have too much grunt. A Prodrive Scooby is a pretty close match and IMHO a P1/STI the same. If you look at mag figures the M3 is over 2.5 secs quicker to 100mph than a UK car. Its figures are almost identical to a P1/STI.

As someone said the new 330Ci will eat the Scooby at high speeds. The 330 is limited at 155 !!. The Scooby max's at 143.

Also as Simon De Bank says a BMW with a good driver will be quicker round the twisty stuff than a Scooby in the dry. Its just that most BMW drivers wont win an award for driver skills, although some of the Scooby driving Ive witnessed recently leaves a lot to be desired. In fact I think I now see more Scoobies with front fogs on than BMW's.

Anyone ever tried to pass a fully laden T5 estate when he doesn't want you to? Held me up big style on the twisty stuff, but could barely keep up on the straights. Standard UK Turbo by the way. I gave up in the end and consoled myself with the vision of him buying new front tyres every other week...

My previous scooby MY97, was completely standard and as other people have commented never had any trouble with even M3's at traffic lights etc! (yeah Sad I know but when they sit there revving its gotta be done!!!). But like evryone one else once you get up to speed the difference soon bcome less apparent and it all comes down to whose carrying the most momentum , who got on the throttle first etc.

Current car is an RB5 with GGR induction kit and scorpion exhuast system minus Cat. And to put the corners thing into perspective, I'm a season ticket holder at a football club whose name I won't mention for fear of ridicule!! But to get to the ground I have to drive a very windy road national speed limit all the way except for one small section of 30 mph through a village, bear with me this does bear fruits (where have all these bears come from must be wearing petrol powered boots to keep up!!). Any way having been driving this road probably once a week for 7 or 8 years I know it pretty well. Got to a match last year and there is a guy who I park next to there that has a cozzzehhhh of the escort variety. Came up to me and asked me how much work I had done on the car?

Not a lot exhaust induction filter why?

Well I arrived on ***** (name changed to protect the innocent) Lane just behind you at the roundabout, and I'm buggered if I could keep with you and I know that road like the back of my hand!!

BIG GRIN FROM ME!!!!!! you need to buy a fast car mate!!!!!

I cannot understand how a 328i can be as quick as a standard UK my00 scoob.

According to stats on evo knowledge -www.evo.co.uk/knowledge/default.asp

Scoob 328i

0-60 5.4 6.7
max mph 144 149
max bhp 215 193
bhp/ton 177 133

Scoob has a serious power to weight ratio and traction advantage, so all other things being equal it does'nt make any sense at all?

On the way to the last Scooby track night at knockhill I tried to get an RB5 to play on the twisty stuff - I was in a blue 328 Convertable. He wouldnt bite though - probably because he was going on track. It should have been good though because I've got the Mtech suspension and wide rubber.
Beat a UK turbo on the way home from crail in it before though - but it was a particularly disapointing turbo.

Question

If we're having trouble with a 328, then what about the new 330? 231bhp and limited top speed of 155mph.

I doubt it'll do corners like the Scooby (and it should be interesting in the wet ), but it will present a challenge!

Collegue at work has just test driven one (bearing in mind that he currently has a T5) - he was very impressed.

Wow ... that stirred up the emotions - what a great thread

The road was straight and up hill - he was in front of me and I was in his boot - but had he moved over (most BMW drivers wont!!) I dont think I would have been able to fly past him and the road was fast approaching a roundabout ..... oh yes and I was stuck in 1st gear!!! would that have helped the BMW??

Seriously however I have a very good friend who's garage space is wasted with a BMW and Porsche!! she and her husband are soooo impressed with the scooby that he is going to order 'His' and 'Hers' models - a nice metallic red for her and a manly DBM for him - he hated Jap cars till he saw the scooby by the way!! money is no obstacle !!

Luckily, we have both (both MY00) in the household - I wanted Scoob as a company car, but work wouldn't play ball, so I got a 328i (M suspension) and we bought a (completely bog std) UK Scoob. I drive the 328 more than the Scoob

Here's a few brief thoughts:
- feel more relaxed getting out of car after 200 miles. BMW
- interior. BMW
- dealers. Same (but different)
- 1st and 2nd gear acceleration. BMW
- 3rd, 4th and 5th gear acceleration. Scoob
- interior noise. BMW
- exterior noise. Scoob
- feels most 'planted' on the road. BMW
- safe in the wet. Scoob
- fun in the wet. BMW
- very very scary in the wet with ASC 'off' - BMW
- brakes. BMW (by miles, I'm afraid)
- arrive at a corner and realise I've braked much much too early. Scoob
- power on oversteer. BMW
- power on understeer. Scoob - but still practicing!
- other cars hate you. BMW
- grin factor. Scoob
- feel really silly when I wave at other Scoobs. BMW
- which do I take when I go to the office, even though I have pay for the petrol myself. Scoob

You've got to face it that the purchase price of the cars differ by almost £10K and that must account for something. I'd say its £5K for the badge and £5k worth of 'betterness' but overall:
- value for money. Scoob ... and it was my money!

My STI is about the 4th Turbo charged car I've owned and like the rest, is very much effected by the weather.

Once I could only keep up with a 328i (muggy day) on other occasions M3's looked slow in comparison.

watching a M3 at Kemble Airfield, it looked hopeless on the tight corners compared to the UK Impreza's and was very much slower than them.

But with only 2900mls in the clock your engine will be very tight still.

Have to say though the stright 6 BMW engines are fantastic (had a 5 series) but more cruisers than bruisers

Perhaps I can add to the debate
I have an STI2 and a BMW 328i Coupe for my sins and they are a complete contrast.
In the wet there is no contest my scooby wins everytime across country .I dont think there is that much in it in the dry on faster roads though ,BMW's are rarely pushed as close to the limit as Scoobies and 328's in the real world are not that far behind M3,s in the performance stakes...Yes I have driven M3s...Over 70mph I suspect the performance may favour the BMW against a UK Scooby ,on the track its down more to the driver and I believe Stef is quite quick....!

Just ask Bennyboy what happened when he came head to head with a 328i touring. I was with Benny in his R32 skyline, modified with a MINES ecu. BMW driver made benny work pretty hard.

I came away impressed with the Skyline, the 328 and Benny's driving ability

I used to have a old shape 328 coupe. Nice car, fast, but my scoob feels a fair bit faster, especially setting off. 328s trump card is torque band, twice as wide as impreza's. My scoob only really comes alive beyond 4000, the BM was on song from 2500.

Work harder in scoob and go faster, but relax and a 328 will be closer than you think.

but Martin, no way would you beat a uk turbo in a lard-arsed soft top unless he wasn't trying or was just in 4/5th gear

Just in the interests of science I took my P1 for a blast today, and then took out the new 330CI. pretty impresive, quicker feeling than a std UK car and would be hard work to pass in the P1. I'm sure with a half decent driver a few Scoobies are in for a shock. The 330CI is a nice improvement on my old 328. Lots more torque and general getup and go.

328s must be what £30k and an M3 say £35k to £40k.

Scooby isn't the fastest car in the world but probably just about is in its price bracket.

M3 to Scoob is probably not a 'fair' comparison.

Would also say a lot is down to the driver.

Nick - definately did beat it on the motorway on the way home from crail. But I meant what I said about it being disapointing - even saw it beat by a nova saloon down the quater mile when he had a really bad start, it was hilarious! Horrible colour though.

I can't say much other that.

I have an MY99 and had a 3.28i for 2 half years before that.

The Scoob is much faster!

I still drive a 3.28 now and again as a collegue has one - it is crap in comparison.

I came up behind a 328 a few weeks ago in my STi V and was surprised by it's speed. Though the scooby was obviously much quicker, given the road layout I couldn't nip past safely as I'm used to. We got to a T junction, turned right and then I pulled out and red lined it 1st to 3rd. It was gone.

Can't afford the P1 im afraid but if the Brake kit is going cheap.... or maybe the ICE.

Speaking of ICE, my Sony 10 Disc stacker has finally circum to 5yrs of battering from flying boot objects. Is there anyone out there begging to part with a second hand one?
