Hi,
Classic shape Type RA I think are fastest, but along with all WRX's & STi's in that shape are all imports IIRC. Fastest UK supplied cars are P1 or the rare 22B Type UK.
New shape you'll need to look at Spec C's and S202's, again imports, or the specially made Type 25.
Looks wise, they're all ugly. But somehow they endear you with their other charms.

There are many others who can offer better advice on classics than me. Imports carry lots of risks. Obviously you have no idea of the cars history in Japan, you need to ensure the engine has been remapped for our fuel (98 ron, Jap is 100 ron) or the engine will go bang (but a car in the 7k range will have been done as it will have been run here for a while I would think). Unless you don't mind getting your hands mucky, or have deep pockets, stay away from seriously modded cars. The more power they eek out, the less reliable they become, and an engine rebuild can be as much as 4k
I'd recommend getting in touch with some of the great guys in the S.Yorks area and start going along to some of their meets (we'll be down that way for our meet/run at the end of this month (WYIOC), so keep an eye open in the Northern Events forum) and you'll be able to gain valuable advise and may be pointed in the direction of some good cars from within the community, where you can check out its history.

With 7k depends:
Under 30 if you go import - insurance big bucks, so perhaps wiser going UK with no mods.
Over 30 I'd go import, get yourself a nice MY95/MY96 and insure it, tax it and service it and have cash left over for a few mods.
Over 30 go with L&V insurance and they don't give a monkeys about speeding points or mods (so long as you don't up the capacity of the engine).
Imports have more power (a lot more), generally better condition with lower miles and a few nice bits like climate etc.
WRX MY95-96 has 260ps (256bhp)
UK MY95-MY96 has 215bhp and normally no air-con/climate.

I have no rear wiper, my aerial is at the front, by the driver so to speak, and I have a MOMO steering wheel. So mines a UK version? WRX is just the model isnt it?

Older classics - only imports were WRXs.
Since 2001 (I think) re-badging meant UK were WRXs or STIs.
