Default RB5 vs UK Wagon..

RB5 has after market exhaust. Wagon has nowt added, standard everything and a mother and girlfriend in it.

Which would win from the lights, long straight dual carriageway?

Answer later.

huh? If we assume that the wagon is a MY99/00 like the RB5 then they're exactly the same, so therefore its down to driver ability changing gear and how much you rev the clutch.

I dunno where this one is going

Sorry, yes both MY99. The RB5 did have what looked like a Magnex exhaust though.

Due to mother and bird, the RB5 was given a head start by me.

Also UK Wagon vs 1994 Jap STi with scooby ECU, full decat and Green filter(mornin' bob )

I was told a similar thing - only cosmetic differences (like the blue interior) between the RB5 and std UK Turbo. RB5 is often quoted as having 237 bhp which is the figure for the PPP turbo.

wagon will be much faster due to aerodynamic shape, which massively reduces drag losses at speeds over 30mph

RB5 has Prodrive quick shift with different gear ratio, therefore would say it is was quicker acceleration

Not strictly true - a porker 911 Turbo S4 piped me a while back (although I did have my missus in the car screaming at me - if it wasn't for that he was history )
Also, whilst silver wagons are faster than their 4 door counterparts, nothing beats a green wagon - FACT!
Overall though, I agree with your sentiments

Are you entirely sure an RB5 has different gear ratios, I was led to believe they were just a regular turbo 2000 with some styling bits added on.

My silver turbo 2000 is a turbo 2000 with some performance bits added on though

RB5, AFAIK has the exact same gear ratio's as any UK MY99.

Only differences are the RB5 uses the STI bodyshell and has a sold rear bulkhead + quickshift and 17" alloys. Rest are cosmetic. Both will have the same power, but wagons are very slightly slower than saloons if you look at the official acceleration figures.

IF it's the WR Sport version, then it runs the PPP ECU so should be quicker in a straight line.

Engines, drivetrain, suspension are the same so would come down to weight and driver IMHO.

There were two types of RB5, standard 215bhp and WR Sport 237BHP 258Lbft. Latter would pull away from wagon. Former would probably appear the same despite RB5 being lighter.
WR sport version normally recognised by high rear spoiler but not so much nowadays when most have PPP fitted or other mods.
Gear ratios no different from standard uk, but quick shift as standard on all RBs.

and that said we all know how much EXTRA power you need to really make a difference on the road in a straight line, 20hp is neither here nor there really, when I had around 265hp from my uk classic, a friend with 230hp in the same model was no more than half a car length behind, sometimes ahead even, all down to gear changes, traction and clutch.

If you had over 300hp on the other hand you would have a little bit of time to "play" with a standard uk car, but mess it up and you'd have ground to make up, which you would eventually.

I estimate in my experience that you need atleast 30% more power in an otherwise equal car to really punish someone, or have superior tyres/suspension setup or serious skills to leave someone around a track.

Well......

...It was a dead heat, my car had 3 people in it(2 of which were screaming their heads off), the other car (RB5) had just the driver. I let him go first so my mum didn't have heart attack and also to see what it was like. I could hear his engine screaming(along with the females), he was about 3 foot ahead of me when I braked to let him in the lane.

All in all wagons are great, and mine being silver is clearly the greatest!

It was great fun, first time in ages I have had a proper, good hearted race from the lights*

Well, In my experience Blue My02 waggons with a ninja back box are the fastest!

Or another way of looking at it is that it's better to have the tesco wagon rather than paying over the odds for a limited edition that offers nothing for the extra cash. After all if you want performance then go for a proper jap spec car every time.

(Spoken as someone swapping out of a jap car to a lower spec UK wagon)

I do like the look of the RB5's.

It wasn't faster though
