Leather seats in GC Imprezas? (more...)
Hello all. I'm a GC owner from the States and just picked up a used pair of '98 WRX seats, good condition. I've got a leather interior in my car as it is now, but of course the WRX seats are coming in black cloth, I think with yellow parts on the bolsters/wings.
There's some argument as to whether these seats will even take leather, as some folks think the cloth is glued to the cushions. Friend of mine has STi Ver.6 seats though, and doesn't think that's true. Thought I'd ask here, since you guys would be the ones to know.
No USDM/CDN leather vendor has templates for them, so I'm wondering if anyone on your side of the pond may. Before you say anything, yes I'm well aware that leather does not equal good grip, however I like it for its longevity and looks, and besides there's lots of Alcantara inserts, etc. that add grip.
This is the only pic I was able to source through a search here; most posts with "leather" in the title had no photos.
I'd be doing a black/grey combo myself, or solid grey, but that's the basics.
Thanks-

Here's mine, MY00 with full Nubuck MOMO retrim with suede inserts. Unfortunately I have no template information for you, but hope the pics help. (and for the record, the grip is pretty good even when sideways)

Did you have Momo custom-make those for you, or did they already have those and you just ordered the colors you wanted? If the latter is the case, I can probably get them for my car.
What did you pay, if you don't mind my asking? I can look up the current pound-to-dollar conversion, unless you have it.
Although...hmm... I only need the front two seats, not the full interior.
I assume it's leather on the seating surface and vinyl everywhere else? Most cars south of $100k seem to be that way.

Ooh wow, very nice indeed! And where were yours done? Cost?
I may do a very similar setup to what you have. Maybe black Alcantara with grey outsides, to match my OE seats. Or all grey leather except for a little black Alcantara on the bolsters for that good grabbiness.
Wish I could attach a picture of my interior so you could see the color of the light-ish grey leather I have. Hmm.

I cant help you on price.........the seats were done by the first owner.....
I believe it cost about 1500 Australian dollars to do........but dont quote me. (3rd owner)
I think it was a custom job from new but again I cant be sure. They do match exactly the gear **** and steering wheel so I think it might well be.
The seats are all leather/suede and the inserts on the door cards.........everything else is normal plastic.

Good info, thanks.
My seats were done by a Massachusetts branch of www.classicsofttrim.com who does a lot of dealership-option leather interiors. There was a black leather, Subaru/factory option that looked nice, but black to me was too hot.
I've had ALL black, smooth-surfaced interiors before. Ugh, no fun!!! A little is okay, but all is bad, for me anyway.
That company told me that they don't do "aftermarket" seats, though. Which includes anything out-of-country, it seems.

Can anyone tell me if the OE fabric is glued to the seat cushions?? I'm having a debate with a leather vendor over here, and his contention is that that's the case. I sent him the pic of the blue/grey leather (from my first post), and he said "that backs up my theory, wrinkles everywhere."
Well, I personally just think it was a poor kit or poor install, or both. The other, more recent two pics look much cleaner and more professional. I sent those to him.
But I'd like to clarify, absolutely, about the fabric on the GC WRX/STi seats.
Thanks!
-Chris

yes it is glued to the cusions (sp)
i work as a seat builder for nissan and if subaru build there seats in the same style, this is how it should be put together
main parts are bonded, any trims will probably be hog ringed, you can bin the hog rings on re assembly and use good quality zip/cable ties
the reason why i say the seats are defo bonded, is that my drives seat cusion is suffering from sum delamination, and i spend half my job makeing sure the nissan seats dont suffer the same fate
the fabric will be able to be pulled free from the sponge, but you must take your time to avoid ripping the sponge

Okay, so in other words a leather install is going to be a real pain.
I appreciate the help.
Any other pictures of leather in GCs? C'mon there must be at least a few more!

That's your car? Cool. That pic has been all over the web!!!
I first saw that on NASIOC.com I think over a year ago, and saved it to my PC, I thought the seats came out so nicely.
Very good.
