The WRX does have some underseal in the wheelarch area from the factory. 2 winters driving here in NE Scotland does not seem to have done much damage to the under side of my
WRX MY96. However I have treated the car with Waxoyl, which should keep rust out of the areas that you cannot see.

Simon,
More info would be good, thanks.
Charles,
Did you apply the Waxoyl as soon as you got the car, or recently?
Mike,
Why did they recommend against aftermarket undersealing? Did they not think it was good value for money, or did they think it gave no extra benefit? And were they talking about uk cars which have a level of afterseal appropriate for our winter conditions, or would that apply to Japanese imports as well?
Thanks

Hi,
After many years working in the motortrade IMHO don't use underseal as it has a tendency when it drys to crack or get damaged then it lets water underneath but not out again, so rusty flour panels!! If you use waxoyl then as it does not solidify it will not suffer the fate (hopefully).

I got my local garage to apply the waxoyl after one winter's use. DIY is an option. You can get a kit from Halfords. Either way it will not cost a lot. Obviously it is best if applied to a new car. Otherwise make sure the underside is cleaned thoroughly before application. Then re-apply every other year.
Adrian is right. Underseal does not get into those hidden areas. Also it tends to come away from the metal it is supposed to protect and then traps damp/salt between it and the metal panels, which is almost certain to cause rust.

I noticed there were alot of "gullys" and holes where the waxoyl was flushed through for added protection. Well worth it.
