Default Evo 7 GSR or MY02 STi Prodrive ?

Trying to decide between the 2 cars at the mo.

Anyone able to offer any advice having owned both cars ? What are the service intervals on the 02 STi ?

Anyone got one for sale near me ?

Dunk, I've had an MY02 STi, an My03 Sti with PPP and now an Evo8 FQ330.

Flamesuit on

By far the most capable car is the Evo, but before I get flamed, remember it has 330bhp. The performance is absolutely stunning, the AYC is one hell of a party trick. The Evo is more unique and dare I say it less common. MPG is comparable with the PPP'd Scoob, I'm getting 19-20mpg round town, up to 24-25 on a run, the only pain is the service intervals of 4500 miles. The extra cost will be 200-250 per year.

Insurance was no more for the Evo, £599 per year. The Scoob will be tracked as standard, the Evo comes with a Cobra alarm in uk spec, check what has been fitted on a GSR.

The GSR is 280bhp supposedly(maybe a little more), so in comparison with a 261bhp scoob, the difference will be slightly closer.

Best advice is to take both out for an extended test and see what you prefer.

Flamesuit off

Thanks Matt. I took the Evo 7 out on Friday and was pleasantly surprised, although I didn't really get a chance to to give it a 'real' test and feel the difference with the AYC. The things that put me off of the 7 was the poor interior (seats exlcuded) and the silly service intervals. Thought it may equate to a little more than £200-250 though, so thats not too bad.

I'm still getting big insurance quotes on the 7, around £1100 (30yo), I expect the STi will be the same.

So in your opinion, even with the PPP, the STi is not a match for the Evo ?

hawkeye - thanks, but I'm in Kent, so a little too far to travel.

The 4500 mile service costs around 200-250, so assuming you are doing average mileage (read 10000) it's one extra a year. Obviously if your mileage is higher you will need more services.

The interior is not as cosy as the Subaru, but you get used to it. The seas are excellent(I have leather) much more supportive than the Sti. The speedo is crap, very difficult to read, I use my road angel to check my speed.

I'm 32 and pay £599 for the FQ, you may find the import quotes are a lot higher. Some people have noted the Evo is much higher than an Sti, but in my experience that hasn't been the case.

Make sure you do your research on the MLR

Thanks again Matt. Who are you insured with if you don't mind my asking ?

My £1100 quote was for an import, so I will try for 'UK' cars. I've asked a couple of questions on the MLR last week and emailed a few people, plus read the lengthy FAQ ! All helpful stuff.

Nobody going to try and convince me to go for the Scoob then ?

I made the same choice a while back and went for the Evo VII (over the STi7), the looks put me off first really, even with the headlight converstion I just couldn't grow to like that front, but inside the Scoob redeems itself IMO, I also found that it's easier to get out of Scooby seats and into another car and be relatively comfortable (I was dirving a Seat Cupra for work lots), not so with the Evo's and my back - I think there's many people who prefer the Evo's seats and say the Scoob's lack back support, but I didn't find that with my back and the jumping in and out of the Evo and Seat gave me some back problems, not something I had a problem with when I went back to my current Scoob (MY03 SpecC).

Performance wise I think the Evo's gotta have it, don't think that if you line them side by side that the Evo will be down the road ahead of you if your in the Sti7 with PPP, just far enough to get out of reach of the barge pole, but not far enough not to read the number plate (unless your Mr Magoo) Cornering is a different matter, I'd rate the Evo's over the STi7 on normal every day roads (not track days) every time without question, and by a good way this time.

Servicing costs are what put me off both my Evo's (VII & VIII) with the sort of mileage I do in my main car 20K (another 25K in what I class as my 2nd car - the Seat), the maintenance bills were flying left right and centre on the Evo, not so with the Scoob and I've mentioned it a few times before in threads (whether I was unlucky or not), but the Evo cost over twice as much to run as the Scoob for me and my mileage. It was heavier on the clutch, tyres and brakes as well (I warped 2 sets of Brembo's with the Evo).

But at the end of the day, I've always learnt that you can't fight what you yourself are comfortable with and if they're both within budget, it's whatever feels comfortable to you - good luck with the purchase
