Default Resale Value - Unmodified vs Modified

Anyone have an opinion, would a completely unmodified turbo be more appealing / valuable than a modified one?

depends on the buyer. if the mods are done correctly I wouldnt have a problem buying a modified cars yet you always know what your getting with a standard car

When I was seraching for a classic UK Turbo I only went to look at standard UK cars- its what I wanted and they seemed to be fetching more than the ones with wheels, exhausts etc.
I think people start to think of reliability issues on a 5 year old modified scooby.
At least with a standard car its like a blank canvas.
If I were going for a brand spanker or 12 months old scooby then mods wouldnt bother me as much - possibly even make me go for it depending what they were.

In terms of RESALE, its std, std, std all the way IMO

Having did this a few months ago the reasons are at least 2 fold

1. For some reason a buyer will always conclude that an unmodified car is more looked after / less abused / more reliable than a modified car. The main point is reliability. If a car has run more boost then lets face it it has seen a harder life WRT engine stresses, however loving looked after it has been.

2. If a buyer is into modding the car once bought, then
A) He will want to do it himself so wants a clean canvas, so to speak, or
B) Will only consider a car with mods that he wants, for example a £150 VTA BOV might not be a worthy mod to some people and is of no value.

3. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Any non OE aesthtic mods can only detract buyers as now you are not appealing to the whole market.

4. Sublte mods that create a better package (4pots from 2pots, uprated ARB's) will help sell the car quicker to those in the know, but will not increase its value to either those in the know or those that don't.

Two months ago I had a MY 95 WRX with

Bumpsteer mod
Whiteline ARBs and droplinks
Godspeed 308 brake kit
Full Scoobymania decat
K+N panel filter
MY99 IC
knocklink, AFR, EGT gauges
ScoobyECU
STi IV mid rear spoiler

I put it all back to std, apart from bumpsteer mod , the filter and rear spoiler (scratched the low level spoiler in house move ) and sold it for £5500, 60kmiles with fSH including the 60k service.

I then sold all of the above for £1300

I don't think I would have got £6800 for a modded 95WRX, even though IMO it was a very well sorted 290-300BHP example.

exactly, if a cars running 300bhp how long has it been running that sort of power, how hard has it been driven with that power what life would the engine have left etc etc

Would prefer a fully-documented, mildly-modded car - at least you know what you are getting.

How can you be sure an unmodded", standard car hasn't in fact been de-modded??

You are limiting the amount of interested buyers with a modded car.

If you are trading a car in as a PX, the price you get for a car with modifications will be the same (or less) than a standard.

When I chopped my Fugly in last year, I took all the mods off and sold them on here within 3 days.

Take the following scenario:

1. WRX MY03 PPP or ...

2. WRX MY03 + ECUTEK 2 + Performance Center Cat + Nice shiny new single pipe a back from manufacturer x.

Which would you buy? I guess most first-time Scooby owners would take (1) and perhaps for most second plus Scooby owners it would be 50/50 as both scenarios would be looked at. IMHO any of the above are good, although with a car < 3 years old the remaining warranty on (1) would be very attractive - expect to pay slightly more also.

My message is ... appeal and value a mutually exclusive. (2) may be more appealing but (1) may be more expensive - there is no right or wrong answer here!

That's generally what I was hoping to hear, cheers.

I'm selling my 98 Turbo, it's spotless and completely standard, it's got gold speedlines but they were already on, still got standard exhaust etc etc.

The main reason I didn't mod it at all was due to the warranty and the thought that it's my first subaru and if I was out looking to buy ( I bought this from a colleague who cherished it ) the mods would put me off (and I couldn't afford Prodrive / wasn't value for time I was looking to keep car)

Hoping I've made the right move.....

I have a MY99 totaly standard and keep thinking about the mods Zorst, for the sound. Then I think about insurance, with no mods no problem, also its not in your face so less attractive to the people who don't own it
