Motorway Economy??
OK I know its boring but what economy can I expect out of a new shape UK WRX? I'm going to be doing a steady 70mph (too easy to get caught on the motorway) and am deciding wether to take the missus Corsa 1.0L (errrrr....) or the Scoob. I am doing about 1000 miles altogether...

1000 miles in the scoob should cost you around £100 at todays prices if you take it easy, especially if you drop back to 60 - 65 MPH.
Corsa should see this cost drop to around £65 or so.

It's doing 25mpg (average tank) with a mixture of Urban/40mph limits + 50 mile back road thrash... I was expecting closer to 40 mpg on the motorway??

Okay, i can tell you what, with patience, anticipation and a fairly clear motorway, you can get from your Subaru WRX (new shape 01). i do log down my mpg's when i fill up(sad but true) but the worse first.....
8 mpg on track
11mpg when trying very very hard to catch up somebody on a meet (lots of 2nd gear use i remember, using full revs, changing down from 3rd at high revs to keep on full boost)
15 when driving very fast on a meet
20 when driving in the slowest group on a meet
20-25 in urban driving depending on how many longish drives
31mpg at 75 mph for 148 miles on motorway
30-35 scenic touring
and........
41.3 driving at 50mph for 172 miles on motorway!
these are fact, not just 'i got xxx miles out of a tank'. these are fill up to fill up. 344 miles is the most i have got out of a tank, that was 31.1 mpg, 11.06 gallons, 50.26 litres.
it can be done. i could prove it to you. any normal imprezza turbo can get over 35mpg
Cheers

The most I've ever had from a full tank is 364 miles, which included a few motorway trips. If it was ALL motorway, steady cruising stuff, then I would be aiming for 380, maybe more.
( it's all in the throttle touch )

I've done some long motorway stints, but only managed 29mpg best.
But I wasn't doing 50mph for 3 and a half hours. I'd aim to do 172 miles in 2 and a half or less. Mind you because I get there quicker it wouldn't cost me much more .

If your really bothered about economy, take the corsa, since you would be driving like an OAP, you might as well look the part. LOL
Then the misses can have a fun time ragging the scoob.

It was purely an economy run i tend to do one sometimes when i get a different car. 50 uses a lot less than 70 (some say 50% less). you have to be on a free-flowing motorway, i never used the brakes (until coming off) and hardly touched the throttle (never overtook), but it was boring. if you can do 29 at 70 you will be able to do around 37 at 50

I average about 35mpg @ 80 on long motorway run. I always assumed that if you cruise at around the peak torque rpm, you get best mpg? (2900 in 04 wrx - I think?) could be total crap, but what ive always done. Mind you, difficult not to poke it when wayne in his nova goes screaming by!

My 04 WRX has averaged 31 mpg on its first few tankfulls, well pleased, this is with a mix of motorway (75-85 ) and town. And I drive with the aircon on all the time. And yes I have been using the power to the full when I can.
I did not expect it to be this good as I had heard stories of 18 mpg !!
My MINI Cooper S I have just got rid of did around 26-28 !!

Our 04 WRX Wagon does 60 miles a day on Motorway and A Roads (Mainly Motorway). At the moment we are getting between 27 -28 and that is in the first 1,000 miles. We are recording the mileage/quantity of fuel at each fill up. So I would have thought on a long run you would have had at least 30

I have heard rumours of ecu systems switchable from inside the car to both increase and decrease power. So when cruising on open road possible to lean out the engine and so better economy but with less power.
I have never actually seen anything like this on any modifiers site so not sure if even possible
