i might be able to get my hand's on a few grand soon (maybe) and at the moment drive a MY98 wrx (276 bhp 240 lb torque) which i love and was just wondering if the impreza type R and the evo V are worth the extra 4k?

he allready has nigh on type r power
he would need a slight torque increase to match the sti versions
the type r`s are nice cars, but for him to swap he would get sum tarty bits and lose 2 doors
and that is about it, depends what your looking for, an sti is a massive jump from say a 93 wrx or a early uk turbo, but from a 276bhp wrx its not "that" much when you take off the tarty bits (strutbraces and front spoilers etc etc)

I think you need to try an STi to compare it. Its a hell of a lot faster than a UK modded to 280 bhp. There was a thread on this recently.
Not sure on how it comapres to a WRX though, but the gearing and overall setup makes it a fair bit quicker, and much more focused car.

do it!
recently traded a MY00 uk with 241 bhp for a V6 type r v limited - different league. normal sti's had lower gear ratios than uk/wrx's but the type r has even lower again (not good for motorway driving) so even with the same power it is a faster accelarating car with the loss of some (proberly never used (or at least frequently never used!) in the vast majority of cars) top speed
dccd = drift on!
then get it decatted and ecutek like i did
best of all by the time modified the uk car ie wing, suspension, wheels, zaust and induction kit it costs about the same to insure

i had abit of a play with an S reg sti (which did look very nice) just after i got the wrx and without going into to much detail (or trouble) it was exactly the same! i couldn't gain an inch on him and he couldn't make any ground between us iv'e even had a go with an evo VII (below speed limits obviously) and that wasn't any faster than mine but this was all on just straight road's so on the twisty's it might be a very different story

you get the bigger injectors, ihi turbo and a whole host of other things, telling him to buy one because sumbody swapped from a uk car is a bit daft (no offence)
uk cars and jap cars are diffrent, the 97 onwards wrx saloons are a very underrated car with a lot of people not realising, exactly what they are like

i think your confirming all the feelings i have mate iv'e had a play with alot of car's since iv'e had the scooby (i'm not a boy racer ) and there really isn't many car's that can actually make any ground on me maybe if i took my scooby to track day's etc the type R maybe worth the extra 4k but i really feel i'd be wasteing a fair bit of money

The handling of the STi TypeR (fitted with DCCD) is significantly better than the UK or non DCCD STi. The torque split of the DCCD and its diff setup diferences (plated rear rather than VC and Plated variable centre rather than VC) improve the chassis balance in a big way. If you get an STi TypeRA they are even better with the adition of a front LSD. The brakes are the same size 4 pots but with no ABS you get a lot more feel. There are lots of subtle diferences which translates into a much faster car, even if power is identical.

mmmm....but would you honestly buy a car of the same age and roughly the same power for another 50% of what your car is worth.....thats the question that keeps going through my head
i know it probaly is but....

EVO 5's are fantastic cars, but expensive to run. My credit card heaved a sigh of releif when I got rid (though it was a hard driven one, the previous owner was a serious rally driver) and they just look so evil.

i spent another 60% more of my cars value, but it was a month newer!
personally no regrets what so ever. plus the it had less than half the mileage of my old car. i could also offset some of the cost difference because the type r had tinted windows and front lip spoiler which were going to be the next 2 mods on the uk car costing around £500. it also came with 12 months warrenty (proberly not worth the paper its written on) but when buying from a dealer under the sale of goods act, if anything goes wrong in a reasonable time its down to them (in theory anyway).
the type r is always gonna be worth more a fair bit more than an equivalant uk/wrx, so in a couple of years sell the car and i wont be that worse off for having a far faster and exclusive car (he says confidently!)
