It doesnt really state which cars are affected, i dont know of any 6 speed boxes failing, the 5 speed boxes has always been a little on the weak side but even they will take quite abit of abuse before dying.

I'd seen something about this - I thought it was related to Foresters, although I guess the transmission is near identical to that of the Impreza. I haven't heard of anyone suffering transmission failure.

I have - I spoke to someone a few weeks ago who had one of the first bugeyes off the boat from Japan, and needed a complete gearbox rebuild a year later because it wouldn't go into reverse IIRC.

Ive had to seperate problems with my gearbox in my 03 WRX. Same gear both times (4th) the synchro has gone, and is being fixed when the parts arrive again. Went after 4k and 13.5k. Its the only problem ive ever had with it but it does leave me a little concerned for then the warranty does run out!!

Neil.

5th gear synchromesh went on my 2002 WRX after 600 miles. It was replaced under warranty and has not had a fault in the next 28,000 miles.

It's worth being wary of the bunch placing the advert. Legal firms looking for class-action suits they can pursue is very common in the US. For all we know one of the partners in the firm has had a failure, has talked to his mate who's also had one, and hence have assumed it's really common and are trawling for others to bring a law suit.

Much better to just ask your dealer for a warranty repair IMHO (considering virtually all new-age's are still under warranty!).

My 03 WRX is a pain to get into reverse. I am getting the dealer to look into it on next service.

Mine's the nicest gearbox I've ever had in a car (the MY03 SpecC I've got now), had problems with my 5-speed P1 box and my Evo's - always been one for having some sort of prob, even if it's just a little thing like trying to get into reverse or occasionally not going into 1st.

I've done 20K in this car (near enough) since October and I've not had a single problem - Subaru should employ me as a tester (hint, hint)

Mine's slightly noisy on the synchro in second (always has been - not got any worse in 26,000 miles).

Reverse sometimes obstructive, but I 'touch' the synchro in first or second beforehand, and it slots in OK. MY02 WRX - five speed of course.

It's an American thing where some people have had gearbox problems on manual cars when the WRX was launched. Most Americans have never driven a 'stick' car so it's not unexpected.......

LOL, funny but true.

Also they like their traffic light grand prix over there!

It seems the reverse gear is a common problem, but then if I think back I think its been the same on every car I've ever owned.

The same co. was running an ad for piston slap sufferers some months back.
This would have been great for all those suffering on MY97/98 cars out of warranty (me included) - I guess this is only a US lawsuit though and not applicable over here?

Reverse is easier to elect if you go from 1st to neutral, release clutch, then engage clutch and reverse.
