nieghbours and my exhaust!!
when chatting to my landlord today, (washing machine broken down) he mentioned that a few of my neighbours have been complaining to him about the noise from my exhaust, a full decat with magnex bb.
i never rev it anywhere near my house especially when the engine's cold but i do let it tick over to cool down.
i've had the full decat for over 6 months and although only say hi in passing to my neighbours none of them have ever mentioned the exhaust to my face.
i don't think it's that loud at tick over, i really like the sound.
my land lord seemed quite reasonable when i explained i couldn't quieten it down without changing the exhaust.
there, rant over.
cheers matt.
and another thing I DON'T play loud music late at night.

Take a slow approach to your house letting the turbo spin down while still out of ear shot. Then you can turn if off quicker.
Failing that start playing stupid loud drum n bass at 3am, they'll soon forget about the exhaust noise

It's amazing how many people on here think there is no problem in having an exhaust system which is obviously annoying to the neighbours? Although, as car nuts (and that includes me) we love the sound, even I would get a bit p****d off if I had a neighbour who arrived home late at night and let the thing idle for five minutes! the low frequency sound penetrates walls, windows etc much more easily than higher frequencies (although you don't say what time of day is involved) Earlier in the day is not so much of a problem. It's when in the day it occurs that is the main issue.
Jaybird's right, you don't need to let it idle for too long as long as you drive the last mile or so at a slow engine speed to equalise temps.
We have to be defensive here as it's not the neighbours who are in the wrong! Also tecnically your car is not fully road legal (depending on age of car) by having a full de-cat? Let's hope some clued-up neighbour doesn't sus this and use it in the argument!

There was a thread on here recently where a guys neighbours had complained to the council, and IIRC if your car has any non-standard parts on its exhaust system you can be forced into changing it , and all parts must be marked. Better to reach an amicable solution before officialdom steps in and throws rule books at you. My neighbour has a pet lip over mine, and hates the fact that I work W/E nights and so return from work at 6.45am on sat/sun. I have a WRX PPP, and the PPP was on from new, so AFAIK it is standard, and marked

I think JohnD has got it exactly right. You have to have a bit of thought for the neighbours. As was said-let the turbo cool off as you drive the last bit towards home. Easy to do and everyone will be happier.

I fitted a TSL Firestorm for a week to my full decat system and it woke next doors baby up twice, (Modern 4bed detached housing estate, everyone with DGlazing).
So i took iy off, refitted the Scoobysports and no problems
Until my mate with his P1 (and my old Firestorm) somes to visit
Mind you, the neighbours are moving in the next week, so who knows.............

Never had any complaints from my neighbours or my parents about my car being nosiy (Full decat comprising of a BPM TwinDump downpipe into Blitz Nur Spec R) and trust me it was fooking loud, especially when the bung was out. Saying that, I did not accelrate when coming home, as lived on a hill, so could just 'coast' down the hill, so maybe that helped.

hi,
cheers for the advice everyone.
mornings i leave after most of them have already gone, about 8am but i do work some w'ends. and i take it easy through my village and don't leave it idling that long. however i don't get back from work till 1 am at least once a week so i can see how that might me annoying.
i think i was more annoyed that they went to he landlord rather than talking to me, by the way i am by no means intimidating.
cheers matt.
ps has anybody tried a full decat with the original equ. subaru bb how loud would that be?
or would putting the centre cat back on make much of a difference?

I'm lucky, my next door neighbour keeps his (race piped) motorbike in my garage (and his mx bike), the guy across the road has a totally unsilenced 2 stroke mx bike and another neighbour has told me how much he loves the sound of my car, so I'm pretty much in the clear

A Magnex Backbox is hardly a loud exhaust is it? Probably one one quietest aftermarket ones about. I can understand complaints with some of the Blitz's etc.
Seems like an over reaction to me. No doubt your car is the only "sporty" one there and with one of those big exhausts, must be a boy racer type. And they'll instantly tar you with the boy racer brush and want to get rid of you in whatever way possible. So be careful with what you say.
Let your landlord know that if anyone has a problem to tell you directly, and perhaps when they visit, you could ask them to sign a petition over those noisy lot upstairs with the loud music

Sometimes I think we forget how loud our exhausts sound to people! I have never thought of mine as being particularly loud although people always say they hear me coming long before they see me! Full Mongoose 3" Decat!
I realised the other day that its not just about how loud it is - the low resonant waves probably have a lot to do with it. I drove into a multi story carpark and as I passed a row of cars (idling or just above) it set of a car alarm which in turn set of quite a few others!!! OOOPs!!!!
I always drive slowly the last two miles home so that I don't have to use the turbo timer! I now think this has been a good policy especially when I arrive home late at night!!
I know how p!55ed off I get when the local scooter kids "race" up and down the street at 20mph with their engines screaming like sewing machines at 1am!!!!

I do a 2 Stage approach when coming home late at night
First off I take it easy for the last 5 miles of the journey (always changing below 2500rpm), then I stop approx 600yards from my house and let the engine idle for a couple of minutes - I'm right on the front by the sea, so there's nobody's house near me at this point. Then amble home (normally under 2K rpm), pull in the drive and by the time the garage door has opened itself, I drive in and turn off.
My car isn't loud either : MY03 SpecC (and until I got the exhaust changed, it was quiet as a mouse - which is why I changed it).
I can well appreciate the noise issues though, my other sister lives next door to a guy who's hardly ever home and keeps dogs in the back yard (about 6 of em), doesn't look after them properly at all and they bark for ever. All the residents of the estate have got the council on him now and they do noise tests by his house all the time - making him sort it now.

Fortunately he was renting and didn't live there long. But it makes me think about mine (MY99 turbo with WRSport backbox), it's not as loud as his but it'll rattle my garage door. I try to do my warm-down the last couple of miles and keep it to a minimum outside the house.

cheers for the replies,
i'm going to start my warm down further down the road from now on,
a bung would seem to be a good option even though a magnex bb isn't exactly the loudest bb on the market,
anyone know if or where i can get one?
also anyone tried dp and centre decat with the oe twin peashooter bb?
cheers matt.

My neighbour had a wee chat with me last week, his complaint he said was not the exhaust (magnex) but the engine he said it sounded like a transit van firing on 3cylinders!!!!!!!coming into the street. Apart from the insult he happens to drive an old harley davidson that in my opinion sounds like a washing machine full of old bolts, think he may have been taking the pss though

Noise & neighbours....exhausts no problem, alarm setting....
I live in a block of flats, with the garages on the ground floor. Any noise echos up the stair wells . My exhaust isnt that loud and I have had no complaints about it (I always cool the engine down on the last bit of the journey.)
My alarm however is bloody loud. Beep beep everytime I lock it, one of the neighbours has mentioned in passing that he always knows when I am comming or going. Spoke to an alarm guy and he said theres nothing I can do!

As for the sound of Harleys without going off on a rant (induced by a visit to Daytona during bike week ) IMO they sound like a 3 cylinder Lister diesel canal boat engine firing on 1 cylinder

Matt,
If you fit the standard back box with the decat you'll find that the noise level is very low but you do get a nice (quiet!) growl when booting it. Maybe you could compromise by getting a standard STi back box which is still very quiet but looks better? Just a thought.
Raymond.

Some idiot round our way has got a Harley that shakes the house when he comes past day or night he don't give a ****.
Ive never heard a scooby exhaust that as loud as this guys Harley.
Suppose it could be annoying if you let the car tick over late at night or early morning, but you are supposed to do this to stop turbo damage.

Turn your engine off 100 yards up the road, get out and *push* your car to your house while doing nothing to hide the amount of effort it takes. After a week of loud grunting and moaning every morning and evening, they'll take pity on you. It may help to get the whole family involved
