£7,500 -

Sell it privately, price it realistically(^but not that realistically), and you'll sell it easily, with an extra 4K in yer pocket!

You buy it cheap to start with, you P/x it cheap to end with.

You can't buy it & expect UK residuals if it isnt a UK car.

Glasses guide for a UK car would robably upset you too lol

Let me check your sums here....
You paid, I hope, no more than £17k for an import WRX when new.
You run it for 3 years.
You expect to have only lost about 30% of it's value?

Now consider its a) an import and b) a bugeye, both factors which hit resale values.

£12k is unreasonable.
£7.5 might be low but it's much closer the mark. This is part ex though, which are normally mean.

Not meaning to be harsh here but we all think our car are worth more than they are, and should apply the above logic.

Finally, aren't new UK STi's less than £25k? Paying someone to run it in for you, an unusual idea...

Thumbs up

Thank goodness I've got the much more desirable MY02 bugeye

I paid 15k last may
well there's the mistake then! If you are selling back to the same dealer that you bought from then I would expect them to be able to move on that price.

Ask for the quote in writing and ask them to also put that they think 50% depreciation on a car already a year old is acceptable Then circulate. Won't do much for others residuals though

Unhappy

I'm feeling a little nervous now. I purchased a 2001 bugeyed WRX import almost a year ago from a subaru dealer for 12K. If my vehicle has depreciated 4.5K in less than a year then I certainly won't be upgrading it. Looks like I'm buggered!!!

perhaps we should clarify the word 'import'

Is it a UK Spec Euro import or a JDM import?

a euro import should sell privately for only slightly less than an equivalent uk only car.

JDM prices will vary.

still i would be surprised to see a MY01 UK Spec for less than 11k unless high mileage

Default Hope this is helpful??

If Clean a U.K Bugeye WRX trades (according to CAP) at £11,000. Glass's at £11,560. I'd expect it to trade in at £8,250 - £9,000 appx. You did save £3k at the start? Best to advertise privately for just under £10K? or keep it?

I also hear that new May CAP figures are going to hit values hard. Theres a lot of stock around -not necessarily Scoobies- but a scooby is not necessarily what the masses are after?

I would imagine your car will retain between 40 and 45 % of its original value after 3 years........ So £17,500 and three years on = Not alot

I traded my MY01 Euro import with 33k on the clock in January and got £14.6k trade in value on a new SAAB 9-3 Aero (Circa £25k)

Subaru offered me £12K trade against an STI 8,i laughed all the way to the SAAB dealers.

I paid £16.4k new for the Subaru from Belgium in October 01,so for nearly 3 years of ownership i lost £2.2k,yes i did leave some mods on the car but who cares when they where offering me so much as a trade in.

At last someone who can work out you cannot have your cake and eat it.

buy cheap and sell dear this just does not happen.

This import thing only happens with cars, its a local tax issue and you will find that the prices with tax around europe are very close.

Some dealers sell jap and uk spec cars. Try one of those they might give you a sensible price.

They obviously had a nice big margin in the Saab to butter you up with an overinflated PX price then

Every car has a value, it's worth what someone is prepared to pay for & thats it.

If dealers offered you what your car was really worth, 99% of you would cry your eyes out, so what they do is offset some of the margin (or profit) of the car you are looking to buy to inflate your PX price. This is called an overallowance.

Just because your EU car is a UK spec doesnt mean it's worth UK money, I believe the average is approximately 30% less of the equivalent UK car. (But then you paid 30% less in the first place so what do you really expect)

If the deal is 'too good to be true' then 99% of the time it is, car salesmen are sharks, out to make as much money as possible from you - yes they will be your mate on the way to the sale, but it's all part of the process - it's the naive ones that make them rich.

The bugeye was considered a MASSIVE failure by Subaru/IM hence the facelift so early into it's lifecycle. The only way they can sell them is cheap. To do that, they have to buy them cheap to start with.

Thats business though!

Also remember that CAP & Glasses are what the cars are being bought & sold at the month prior to publication, so in theory they have another months write down on top of that...

Also VERY few cars go for GG or CAP trade value as most feel they are still out & over inflated - a lot is 'gut instinct' at what they can retail your car for (based on the stock they have at that moment) & then they can work the value back from that, based on prep work needed, margin they want etc etc.

If a UK car GG's @ £11,000 (which I think is too much) I would expect a dealer to try & have it for the £10.5k mark.

Your EU import worked on the basis of my other post @ £7.5K is about right.

Sorry to say this, but welcome to the real world of what your car is really worth.

Economic change will also affect the price (rising interest rates etc)

LOL, why would that be? a UK spec Euro import is exactly the same as a UK car, the only difference is the location of the supplying dealer. Up until 3 years the UK car will be worth a little more second hand as it has a Subaru warranty, beyond this point though there is no reason for it to be worth more.

Like most people I sold my Euro import for slightly less than I would have done a UK car, but only a little.

When you go to buy a house do you ask the seller how much they paid for it? and then say "180k? your neighbour paid 150k for his identical house, and it is up for 180k, so as you only paid 100k I'll give you 120k for it". It doesn't matter how much the current owner paid for the car, or how much it retailed for originally.

Don't see any bugeye's anywhere for sale at £7.5k.

It's got to be too low.

What differences are there between '01 and '02 bugeye's ?? - someone mentioned an '02 being much better. Please tell us.

Thats the trade price - thats why!!!

£7500 after all prep etc would probably be £10,995 or £11,495 with a half decent margin in it ready to give away a shed load for the next customer who comes in & can't face the reality of what thier car is really worth.

Unless you are single handedly going to change the effect that EU Imports have had on the UK market.

Cars are not as simple as houses in that respect as you can't buy a house from abroad & import it for starters
