Default LHD Scooby

saw a LHD scoob today, never seen one before and just wondered how many there are in the UK.

Also why would you get a LHD instead of an import from Japan ?

Doubt anyone's keeping score. It's a given that a few trickle over from Europe and I daresay if you went to Prodrive's car park on any day you'd see more than a handful.

Erm, what makes you think you can't get Japanese imports in LHD form? Think virtually all the "special" STi's are available to order new from Subaru in left hand drive format if you want them.

As to why you'd want one, can think of a few reasons. If the car had a UK registration you could have seen a member of the British Armed Forces with a car purchased in Europe. You could have seen the driver of an LHD rallycar who doesn't like to constantly swap back from one side to the other when in his daily transport. You could simply have seen someone who fancied a cheap European import and wasn't too worried which side the steering wheel was on.

That sounds very unlikely. I thought the most interesting models were JDM only - Japanese Domestic Market. The Japanese drive on the left, so why would LHD versions ever be manufactured?

Correct.

Here's a little clue.

In order to understand Greasemonkey's answer youd need an insight into Japanese culture/society. Virtually all Mercedes and Porsche cars imported into Japan are LHD even RHD models are available which meet our usually stricter TA requirements. The Japanese enjoy the 'kudos' associated with a rare left hand drive car; a tan on your left arm only (arm out of the window...) is very fashionable...

I suppose us LHD owners could in theory out number the RHD ones (possibly have to exclude those outside Europe, maybe not), so we could be classed as the "norm"?

I wonder what the statistics are?
