Default Can a scoob do 180mph??

Had a conversation with a friend of a friend last night, said that they been in their friends scoob at 180mph.......

They had no idea of model or mods etc.......I challanged it , but didnt dismiss it out right

After owning owning one I know the scoobs strongpoints , but I wouldnt have thought aerodynamics are a strong point!, I guess, a scoob need 450+ brake to reach such a speed..and I know some of them have that......

I cant remeber from mine(98 UK turbo), but do the speedos even read up to 180??

Though id ask you guys in the know!

Must be near impossible dynamically and the speedo accuracy at 180MPH would be a good bit out.

Indicated speed and actual speed are often way different AFAIAA.

If I recall, you'd need to adjust the gearing too. I think most impreza's are geared up to 175.

Agreed that speedos are miles out......and that 600 brake should be enough to punt one past 180 !

ive got a dvd in the house and they do a top speed run in about 10 cars and the impreza reaches 237mph only just under the top recorded speed of a nissan skyline and the skyline had 1400bhp

nope the speed was definately in mph as it came 2nd or 3rd out of the bunch and the worst top speed run was a mazda mx5 which did about 205 mph

had the one driver driving all the cars as they say it takes a very experienced man to drive at those kind of speeds

yeah seen it

totaly depends on the cars mods and gear box and stuff, mines only geared for 158

and ive had it sitting on the limiter in 5th a few times, soone must asume that that is the speed it can do

uk gear boxes are better for top end stuff IMO

180mph where?

Yes, with enough power, correct gearing and some aerodynamics it's technically possible to achieve this speed. Andy F's car was clocked at 174mph, for example.

You'd need a decent length of bump-free tarmac to try that sort of speed on the open roads; and be a bit mental

On a standard car clocking 150 mph the true speed is 135mph ish. After you have played about with tyres the error can increase. Going from 205 50 16 to 215 40 17 increases the error for instance so that 150mph is actually nearer 132mph.
Top speed depends on length available, incline, tail wind (or head wind), power, and gearing. Most Jap cars with 4.44 diffs are on the limiter at 136/137 mph true.
The gearing on some UK cars gives around a theoretical 175mph at 7,000 rpm.
The fastest Scoob so far as far as I know is Andy F @174mph.

I have three sets of diffs, 4.44, 4.11 and 3.9s. and a rev limit at 8,000. The diff for best acceleration will not be the diff for best top speed and the length and headwind component is critical. From memory I did 171mph and 11.74 quarter at Elvington and I wood need to go to 3.9s for a higher top speed. The car was rolling roaded a few days later at 501 bhp and since then has increased in stages to 535, 560, 570ish and several runs around 585bhp. All on 2.0 litres.
For 180 mph you would need the right gearing and rev limit and well over 500bhp. in my experience. Remember we are talking about daily drivers and not drag or race specials.

On a standard car clocking 150 mph the true speed is 135mph ish
When mine was std bar exhaust, running 215/40/17s, 160mph recorded was a true 150mph - true as in Vbox so relatively accurate.
When it blew up it was creeping past 180 on the speedo, almost on the limiter. Would "guess that was a "true" 160-165. Got to allow that none of the gauges will be accurate, including revs.

I think a std STI5 gearing will allow about 172@8200rpm?

Imprezas aren't great at top speed - my rear passenger window popped out of it's seal at an indicated 175 - made the rear passenger jump a little

This was done in germany before anyone gets on their high horse

I've had 7k rpm in top .....

Down a hill... not sure what the speed was but I've done 180 on a bike and it felt almost as quick... the cars good for 160 i reckon with 315 bhp... and the speedo's i recon 10mph out at 150... thats about average on most new cars...
After all we're not talking RD250LC from 1983 hear... mine read 125 when it would actualy just top the ton... but it sold bikes for Yamaha...

My car was reeding 145mph at the end of the q-mile after missing a gear and the printout siad 142mph... most new cars arn't so far out... after all most new cars are quite capable of 135mph nowadays.. my old 330BM is booked at 155 tested at 153 and flat out the speedo read 157... with 231bhp the scoob STI PPP is good for 155 so if it was miles out to get that on the clock... well it would be almost back around again...

The point about rev counter accuracy is a good one, hence the need for an auxiliary rev counter. In addition I also have a SPA Microprocessor in both the STi and WRX.
Some figures: Jap WRX M/Y 95. 4.44 difs = 19.5mph/1000rpm.
STi ver 5 : 4.44 difs and .738 5th gear = 21.18mph/1000rpm
On 17" x 40 x 215 and 3.9 diffs = 23.79mph/1000rpm.

Quite a lot of gearing and rev limit options.

Cannot remember the exact figure for the European spec cars but they are something like 24.5mph/1,000.

Just to add that when the WRX has around 148mph on the speedo it is a true 136mph. No doubt it will vary from model to model but with some expensive test gear and quite a lot of test time at Bruntingthorp, the figures for the cars I quote are about as accurate as you can get.

Bull****e.

The only 'red' wagon I know of at the buckles is stevens and his doesnt have the power to do 180mph.. he also doesnt have a road angel.

Also no scoob other than andy has done 170+ (possibly harvey) at elvington

The only cars that go to the buckles capable of that speed are mine, trouts, and maybe the new improved red wagon.

however mine hasnt been to the buckles and mine is geared for 194mph for what its worth.

Mines geared for about 189mph with the 7600 rev limit However it won't go that fast If i can get a standard boot for scooby shootout and if the cars running properly i will be going for 170+mph

Sorry to say it mate but i have that DVD at home and they are trying to break the 300 k/h barrier .......The mx5 doesnt make it, there is also a EVO3 i think, a supra, a massive HP skyline and a lexus amongst others. It was def in kilometers per hour ...still damned impressive all the same though. the scoob is a white Jun car yeah?

yup your right it is the jun impreza, and it achieved 309.10 kmh, on a 2.5ltr 550 bhp engine, which works out at about 192mph. looks like i was a little out on the 1st estimate

there must be some power in your car m8, 145mph after 1/4 mile is phenomenal, nearly into rocket ronnie skyline territory. nice one

cheers

Rigoli cars are doing 9sec Qtrs at around 145mph iirc. with over 1000bhp..

What mods do you have to get to 142 on a 1/4 mile??

Nope, not me, and i have the only red wagon at the buckles meet.

Indicated 160 at Elvington, after 1.25 miles was 157mph, but then i run 18's with 215/35 tyres on.

600 is enough for 200, but maybe not in 1.25 mile's though?

A few observations....

Pretty much every STi VII/VIII is capable of at least 160 MPH with an exhaust, filter and remap. Generally they are still pulling when they hit the speed limiter (set to 255kph).

On a classic car, it is possible to get 168 MPH in 1.25 miles with "only" 350 BHP (no limiter due to aftermarket ECU). The car in question was still pulling and would have got up to 175 given sufficient space (it has done so elswhere). If you can get 175 with 350 BHP it stands to reason that 400 BHP will be easily sufficient for 180 MPH. I think that 200 MPH is on the cards at 500 BHP, but it will take a bit of space. With 600 BHP it should be easily possible, but there aren't currently any 600 BHP Scoobs in the country.

180MPH is definitely on the cards, and I am sure there are cars out there right now that can do it. For my own project, I've set the goals somewhat higher...

Cheers,

Pat.
