Default Impreza running costs?

Hi, i am thinking of getting an Impreza turbo (about £10k to spend)
What model would i be able to get, and year etc. Turbo only.. also i have been told servicing and running costs are very high compared to similar cars, i would like to hear from some people who actually own these. Thanks

You could prob get a nice 2000 Turbo I would say.

Insurance could be the big cost depending on your age/location.

Cool

mY MY99 over 21/2 years and 32k miles cost £26,500 to run @ a meagre 250bhp

This figure included petrol at an average over the 32k miles of 16.7mpg(and insurance @ only £700 PA) but not depreciation nor the cost of the car.

One blown engine, one gearbox, 4 sets of front brake pads, 24 tyres, 2 sets of rear pads, 3 MAF sensors, etc etc etc

Consumables wear out very quickly if driven hard (ie front tyres lasted 4,500 miles on average and front brake pads needed changed at every service (7,500 miles).

Think carefully

If your looking at a 4 year old car then your looking at the 4year service which can/does cost you around 4-500 quid, you then have 6 monthly/7.5k services (whichever first) at around 100 quid, a 5 year service isnt going to be that expensive, around the 100 quid mark again, the 6 year service will be very expensive though so look at 600+ for that one.
Average without wear and tear items, 550 per annum on servicing.

Go for a good proper low mileage UK Turbo with proper service history and it shouldn't break the bank to run. Especially if you only do a limited mileage.

What cars do you call 'similar cars' ?? Even a bog standard healthy car will be 220 bhp or so, plus you've got the 4wd and everything.

What 4wd Turbo 220 bhp plus car is cheaper to run ??

I had the horror stories about the running costs before I got mine, but I went ahead and she's been a diamond so far. Gets 30 mpg with missus driving it most of the time as well.

Select what you buy VERY carefully, know the possible pitfalls and you wont look back.

Thumbs up

Cost me £9k for 3 years and 23000 miles of fun in a MY2000.........worth every penny!!

Includes all servicing (inc body), fuel, tracker (£500), tyres, air con being fitted (£1k), tax and £750 pa for insurance.

I rememebr a £650 bill for one of the services which included front brake pads. Its a real pain having to get the damn thing serviced every 6 months though!!

I have owned My 98 UK turbo 2000 for exactly one year on wednesday, 67k on the clock when purchased, now has 77k, here is the bills so far that i have paid out

1. new sidellight bulb £0.90
2. new battery £45
3. service (main dealer) £137

Petrol consumption is around 22 mpg and i will be having the 90k service done next week (£800 ish) which will last around 3 years before it needs another big service.

I think they are no more expensive than any other car considering the joy it brings when the right foot hits the floor boards

edit: The main dealers sold it to me with 4 new tyres and new discs and pads on the front so could be more costly in the next year of ownership

Well the figures you mention there seem about right to me, that is what i would expect to pay to have any car of this type serviced, it was some Ford RS owners who were giving me horror stories. I will have to be very careful (as you say) as to what i go for in the end, but i am not in a rush to get one, i am happy to take my time to get the right car thanks very much for the info..

My advice would be to get one from a main dealer as they will give you 12 months warranty with subaru assistance thrown in too, remember you only get what you pay for

Those small services are a pain. When you look in the service schedule it really is just an oil change service and a check over while its up on the ramp.

I was quoted about £130 for these small services at main agent. Find an independant, or do it your self if you are competent enough.

It will only cost around £40 quid for a genuine Subaru oil filter, sump drain washer and 5 litres of synthetic oil.

The main Subaru agents are around £75+ vat per hour, so frankly are best avoided if you are watching the budget.

LOL .... The scoobs are addictive, you need to keep it under control to avoid big fuel bills.

Otherwise : buy something like a Ford Mondeo = realise how awful they are to drive = only want to drive if absolutely essential = smaller fuel bills

Thumbs up gotta have one!

I've had a my99 for 5 years now...up until now it's been faultless, apart from both rear numberplate lamps failing...that's been it apart from the usual . You have to expect the usual to wear out tyres, and front brakes..I replaced the front brakes when they wore out with a Godspeed setup which has been great. But seriously...the services on a classic shape may seem a pain at 6 mths, but most scoob owners would do that anyway even on the new models with yearly intervals. You can moderate the costs a little by supplying your own fluids..and spreading the costs around a bit...also if you've a dealer that's playing fair they will tailor the services to the cars mileage/type of use, which again can reduce costs. The only thing to say negatively about these cars is that the harder you drive then the more you'll pay...but surely that's true of any car...My car gets its fair share of hard driving..that's the point of having it ..but if looked after they love it!

It's the ususal old argument .... You'll pay more at a Suburu dealer obviously, but you'll get the peace of mind ( hopefully !! ) of a fully serviced and prepared car with a warranty, so you should'nt have any nasty bills for a while.

Personally, I would rather buy privately and save some money. You can weigh up the seller which I think is helpfull, get an idea of how the cars been treated and looked after by them in the time they've owned it.

Just totally walk away from anything shady, however good a deal it may seem.

Interesting SiPie, how do you get your mileage down to 16.7 mpg on the road?? And how do you drive to kill front tyres in 4500 miles. The 2 sets of fronts on my P1 lasted 43k miles! Ditto 2 sets of front brake pads. Mind you the fronts were changed when only about half worn when I upgraded the brakes. I am still on the original rear pads (that the dealer left in at the 45k service obviously expecting them to last till 52.5k miles at least).

By far the highest cost for me is insurance and petrol...
(Over 3 years)
Petrol - 45k miles, approx £6750.
Insurance - £2700

The servicing is about £1000
Tyres (6of) about £700

Biggest by far is depreciation...

A 3 year old P1 at 45k miles is worth about £15-16k, so that's lost me about £15k.

So add that lot up and you get the grand total of £26,150 or 58p per mile.

That means my daily journey to work and back costs me around £23.24. Even the train is cheaper!

LOL at 16.7 mpg !!!!

LOL at 4500 miles for tyres !!!!

Depriciation is always the big killer, but a really nice well chosen classic thats now at £10k or so should not do so badly from now onwards if it is looked after properly.

I would love a new scoob, even a basic WRX. There's nothing like a new car that no one else has ever owned, but its just getting your head round that money it will loose.

interesting..........

i have a 93 wrx addmittay not the best scoob around.....

but a do a my own servicing and its surprisingy cheap, oil, oil filter and air filter change cost me about £25 every 3k miles, front brake pads cost less than £30, rear pads £16, fuel filter £17, spark plugs £36 a set.

So if your handy with the spanners its not that bad.

The real problem is the petrol cost. I have spent like £150 on optimax and got *just* over a thousand miles, and that was driving like a granny most of the time.

The other big expense is the addiction to speed. Ive only had mine like 3 weeks and am already weighing up engine mods like new hybrid turbos

I am lucky in the fact that I live very near to the Scottish Borders with arguably some of the best driving roads in Scotland

So...... the car was mainly for fun and most nights would involve a certain loop that I started timing myself over the 41 miles.... sometimes I'd know where I slipped up and if I had the time I'd go back and do it again that night, and I had my fair share of moments throughout the 2 1/2 years, but kept it on the black stuff

Saxo Boy and another guy Steve, followed one evening and I reckon they'll vouch that the car was driven hard.

Do remember that 16.7mpg was the average (kept visa bills for petrol over duration of ownership) and from rough calculations the lowest recorded was 9 mpg.

It all depends on how the car was driven and anyone can kill a set of Goodyear F1 GSD'3s in 4,500 miles.

Remind me not to buy a car off Sipie. He must be a hard bugger
It's already sold Ray... with 101,300 miles on it, to a nice unsuspecting chap It did however come with a new engine (84,000 miles) and a new gearbox (76,000 miles), new springs & shocks, practically a new everything

pic 1
pic 2

Pics just because I still miss her .... but something better on it's way soon

My running costs have been very reasonable so far. MY00 Turbo @ £10K Oct 03.

£140 odd Subaru Service
£40 a week petrol and can get 30MPG easy but not too much fun

Decat zorst, K&N Panel, ECUTEK, Knocklink Autometer gauges, STI mudflaps, HKS SSQV STI rear lights. all cost about £2K ish.

Very happy with running costs and nowhere near as bank breaking as my old Pulsar GTIR.

Oh and £60 and 3 points easter Sunday
