safe revs on 93 WRX...
Hi,
I have been looking on certain sites and have noticed that some tuners re-map/raise the revlimit on WRX's to 8k...!!!
The redline on my 93wrx import is at 7k, but on STI's it is 8k, are the WRX/STI engines the same but with just a diffrent map, hence being able to rev to 8k...
What i'm trying to say is if i get a re-map with rev limit at 8k will this allow me to rev to 8k...
John.

AFAIK, most STis have lighter pistons and better valvetrains to allow 8000 limits.
I have the same debate on my EJ257.... piston speeds, conrod loading etc.
Some forced and potential damage are related to the square of RPM, so you could be looking at 31% more conrod loading?

Why would you want to?
I have an STi, with the high rev limit, but the power / torque curve means there's no point ever using the redline. I change at 6.5k max, and that feels like thrashing it.
Only point I can see in the redline, is if you changed the compressor curve, and the engine map to suite.

Will give NO advantages over a 7k limit car.
As said, the characteristics the turbo it has, mean that going to 8k would actually make you slower.
If it was a VF24, I think these peak near the redline (according to the curve I have for my STi)
You need to learn more about the car before doing this, as it will be a waste IMHO.

Its the cams more than anything which dictate the power curve. The average Scoob will produce peak power around 6250 to 6350 rpm. Max torque will at a lower figure. If you rev beyond peak power then you will lose acceleration performance and all you achieve is enormous extra stress on the engine and more noise! as DBM says, there is nothing to be gained by redlining the engine unless you like doing rebuilds. With the lower geared STi there is little point in exceeding much more than 5.5-6K since as you change up the engine revs are at the torque level where the car will accelerate really well. A bit of mechanical sympathy will give better performance and save your engine.

It is usually worth revving a little beyond peak power in a Scooby if the internals will take it, because the average power put down is higher then. If you reach an engine speed where the power in the next gear will be higher than holdling onto this gear, then change, otherwise for maximum performance keep going
