what are the bad points with fitting a bloody big bored backbox?
i currently use a 3 1/2" magnex (with full decat) but wouldn't mind going a bit mental loud for a while. just wondering if there are any performance disadvantages with a large diameter tailpipe?
i seem to remember reading something about potential loss of back pressure to the turbo (?), not to worried about it being too loud, nor am i trying to get any increase in power (infact worried about it doing the opposite)
any thoughts?
cheers

really looking for a technical view on this, i don't want to bugger up what is a perfectly good running car for the sake of scaring the **** out people.
as a side note, i've got a TEK2 running for full decat, i don't suppose changing the backbox will affect any of the programme that's been installed?
cheers

The noise gets very boring very quickly...IMHO..especially the droning on motorways...
You will also get comments from the neighbours when you start it up early in the mornings to get to those early tee off times at southern valley....
Had the firestorm on my MY03 STI with decat centre and resonator removed,
I have now sold that and fitted a prodrive backbox...no difference in performance but my ears have stopped ringing..
good luck

My Firestorm will be swapped tomorrow for a scoobysport. Mine has no cats nor resonator either. I agree that they sound awsome but I need some peace and quiet now!
Its a struggle to drive without making a lot of noise, especially when going uphill from my house every day!

You miserable old b@stards, get your flat-caps on!!!!! I've had my Firestorm (with un-resonated full decat) for over a year now and I'm not even close to getting bored of the sound, it's staying put
Saying that though, I'm getting some equal length headers fitted soon (along with some other goodies), so the sound will change.....

Very WRC? You must have heard Ed's when he had them on - more like very motorbike, IMHO.
Anyway to answer the original question - one "straight through" (performance) back box will make very little difference to another from point of view of flow/performance etc. Any difference it does make, the ECU will quickly learn its way round, so shouldn't spoil your running at all
And you don't ever want back-pressure to the turbo. On a non-turbo car, some back pressure is good, but back pressure after the turbo will only hinder performance, spool etc.
If you want to go really mental loud, there are louder than a firestorm about. It might have the side benefit of Gravesend police arresting other red scoobby drivers.

if you just wanna drive around scareing the **** out of people, theres far better ways of doing it then fitting a massive oversized exhaust.
driving arund with a rambo knife on the bonnet in the same style as the jaguar "cat" would get far better results, even more so if you put sum red sauce on the blade and a few choice bumper stickers eg: "my other car killed 247 people last month"
