Question Best thing for cleaning Alloys?

Sorry if this has been posted a million times before.

Any ideas?

I cant get the damn things clean with just soapy water.

The bloke that valets our cars at work uses an acid. Is this safe/good idea?
Does it **** your alloys in the long run? (anymore than leaving brake deposits on there?)

your comments and advice please.....

I use 'Wax Wizard' multiclean. Never fails to clear brake dust. Spray it on, leave for a few mins and wsh off with car shampoo, rinse and... ooh! shiney!

I use some of the wheel cleaner stuff with a brush (don't use it too often though ) then when they are nice and clean let them dry , then give them a good coat of a good wax , this stops the stuff sticking next time , from then on just treat them like body work, keep waxing

Good point -- with wax, you won't need to scrub hard at all. It should wash off with just a sponge.

No, it's not available through 'normal' outlets. You can contact Mark Underwood, who makes/sells it, directly (if you want to avoid the g/b) at waxwizard@blueyonder.co.uk

I actually use "Muc-Off" by X-Lite. It is meant for cleaning bikes, but is one of the best things I have ever used for cleaning wheels... and doesn't damage them like the acid washes can.

You can get it from Halfords. The only drawback is that it is Pink!!

I have actaully seen it sold in a tyre place under a different name specifically for cleaning wheels. Still pink though

Default wonder wheels

once you have got them clean, invest in a small power washer, then every other day bring it out and give them a good spraying and they stay spotless without having to scrub every other weekend, works for me

Just don't use it too often, as it CAN damage the alloy with prolonged use , at the end of the day they only have a laquered finish just like metallic paintwork ,and I wouldn't use Wonder Wheels on my bootlid !

Might not damage the wheels but I remember seeing a thread on here about it stripping the paint of new-age Brembo calipers

...yet another reason to go for the Wax Wizard multiclean. Plus, if you need another excuse (sorry, reason), it smells nice.

Wonder Wheels came out as the "Best Buy" in a recent Auto Express Product Test. The performance of some of these products is variable and I have had no problem with the Wonder Wheels. Not had any Wax Wizard but interested to try it. Cost? Source?

TonyFlow: don't know mate. Wouldn't be surprised though. It would, however, make for an expensive way to clean floors! Suggest you mail Mark Underwood and ask for a product fact sheet if you're interested.

I use wonder wheels, it's great. Expensive but you can guy it in a 5 litre container from places like Costco & Makro for not a lot more than Halfords charge....

be very carefull with wonder wheels, if u leave it on too long it will definately knacker your calipers. made mine go a horrible grey/green colour.

Wonder Wheels is great but it DOES stip / bleach the paint on your calipers making them go an off-white colour rather than their usual black. Just be careful when applying it.

I used Wonder Wheels for a bit and whilst it did work very well I was concerned by the alkaline content and the possibility that it could, over time, damage the alloys.

I have now started using P21S alloy wheel cleaner by Dr OK Wack Chemie (!?!) and it is superb. You spray it on, wipe it over with a sponge then rinse off - I didn't bother using the sponge, just left it for a while then sprayed it with the jetwash it it came up like new!
Super stuff, if a bit pricey and hard to find. Apparently iAuto import it from Germany - there should be a link on the discounts page of the SIDC page.
