Default Acceleration Problem

Hi - I am hoping someone can help me.

I am experiencing problems when I accelerate hard. The engine revs however the acceleration takes time to kick in (quite embarrasingly took a long time to overtake a Rover the other day). I am not sure what it can be - I can only guess it can be the sensor.

Any views?

If the engines reving and your going nowhere, sounds like a slipping clutch?

if his engine is revving (i'm assuming quite high), would it be turbo lag? a slipping clutch sounds more in keeping with the symptom MCTERNA describes.

i had a similar problem for 1/2 day when i got my car back with it's new engine. despite the fact that the clutch had been cleaned thoroughly post engine failure (when it got coated with oil), it did rev up and there was no noticeable change in acceleration.

this only lasted 1/2 day as i mentioned and i assume some contaminant left over on the clutch eventually burnt off.

Thumbs up

hi Luke,

yes that was me - i had stopped to fix my wiper blade which had inadvertently decided to come loose. you'd be right, i've had the car nearly 5 years now and would have been around Notts in the evenings back then.... until the novelty wore off at least

ps, your afterburners looked well cool!

Had similar problem a few weeks ago on P1.
If sat at 4000rpm and tried to accelerate revs would jump and would take a few secs before they dropped back and car accelerated.
Most thought it was slipping clutch which i knew it wasn't.
Turned out to be a faulty solenoid.

GavM,
How did you establish it was the solenoid? I assume you mean boost solenoid (2 or 3 port)?. The problems above sound like my STi 5, for which I'm about to buy a clutch. My 3 port BS is only a few months old (courtesy of Mr B Rawle) and so I'd hope it's ok.

Nick.

Default Update on problem

Thanks guys

An American guy who participants in amateur rally came over and has been working out of our offices in the UK. He knows the engine a lot better than I (not hard). I picked him up in the Scooby on the way to work and demonstrated the problem to him. He was pretty convinced it was a slipping clutch. He also said that it is an expensive fix too My only fear is knowing little about the engine I would not want to spend the money and find out it is only a solenoid (how expensive fix that is I don't know). So I may ask them to test for a faulty solenoid first (thanks for the tip GavM).

It has been getting progressively worse so I do not think that it is turbo lag.

Your looking at 3 to 4 hours labour at a garage that knows what they're doing (say £150 + vat) plus clutch. Clutch kits range from £120ish (Borg/Beck from Autospares) up to organic Exedy / AP at £320 - £350. Depends on what type of cas/ mods you have.

Wink

Sorry for the delay in replying-been away for a few days.
Dealer confirmed that it was a solenoid. Was the waste gate solenoid (pressure exchange)-probably because of oil in pipework.
Part number 16102AA160
Cost approx £100 and £30 to fit.
Sorted the problems i had straight away

Hope that helps

Jeesh. He could have just cleaned the oil out of your existing solenoid and put it back. Car dealers...

Have you still got the old one or did they keep it?

McTerna - if your fellow reckons it's a slipping clutch, I'd be inclined to believe him. Unless your car's well modified (over 320lb/ft or so of torque), the Borg & Beck unit mentioned above should do the job fine. All you've then got to do is find a local specialist to fit it.

Thanks Grease Monkey - Can anyone recommend a specialist in the West/East Sussex area?

Default It was a slipping clutch

To satisfy any curiosity out there it was a slipping clutch (the guy told me that pretty soon I would be going nowhere if I did not sort it out). He showed me the plate and it was well worn. No with the new clutch in place things are back to normal
