I have saw a black porsche the other day which had front & back "Black number plates with silver letters.
It really looked cool, Especially on a black car - was thinking about putting some on my scooby - any laws against them???

Sorry horror but NO they are not legal..........
Classic Vehicles
Classic vehicles are those registered before 1st January 1973. Plates for these vehicles can display black backed plates with silver letters. There is no requirement for reflective number plates. The legal sizes for car plates are 20.5 x 4.5 inches. The legal sizes for bike plates are 9.5 x 6.5 inches for seven digit plates and 7x6.5 for six digit plates.
Current Law for Cars
Legal plates for cars must have black legal characters measuring 79 x 50mm, spaced 11mm apart with 33mm between letter groups. The characters must be placed on DVLA approved yellow reflective backing for the rear plate and white for the front. All margins must be a minimum of 11mm. The registration must be displayed on one line and split in the conventional way. Tampering with letter groups is not permitted.

Vehicles constructed before Jan 1st 1973
These vehicles can optionally display the "old style" of number plates i.e. white, silver or grey figures on a black background. There are strict rules on the size and spacing of characters and numbers but no standard font.

I had black plates with silver letters on my 16V clio (back a few years now) and agree that it does look the dogs on a black car. I got pulled over after having them on the car for about a month, but the funny thing was that they asked me if they were legal!!!!!! How does that work. After telling a few little white lies they decided that they would have to call in a traffic cop, (even though i had pucka plates in the back of the car and offered to put them on). The end result was a £30 fine and a "have a good night",but she still would have got it though, all 30 quids worth!!!!!
