Default WRX 2001/02 plate - owners help please

We are looking to buy a WRX on an 01/02 plate........

For those of you who currently own models within the 01/02 range have you encountered any specific problems, good - bad points.

Any advice appreciated

Jewels & Nick

I own an MY01 WRX.

Have had it for 18 months or so.

AGAINST:
You will spend money on it, to try and make it faster, when you should have bought an STI in the first place.
Clutch judder.
Strange noises from behind the dash, water sloshing noises when cold, loud 'blowing over a milk bottle' noise at 95mph plus.
Hesitancy.
Not quick or fast enough.
Attracts unwanted attention.
Depreciation(sp).

FOR:
Its not a BMW.
I like it.
It fits in the garage.

Thanks Yozza!

We already have a Terzo but may look to sell in the near future. STi prices out of the question!!!

The WRX 01/02 are in the right price bracket but needed to know potential pitfalls.

He doesn't need a BMW ...lol........I have one of those!

Thanks for your help

Jewels,
Buy one!!!!!!
A superb car, easily modified, cheaper than an STI
Agree with Yoza re: wind noise
No other major problems

HI Ninnybobs

Are they the 'bugeye' version??

Are 17" rims standard?

You obviously love yours. What mod's on yours to make all those lovely horses sing!! (320bhp!!!)

Mine is an Ex-bugeye, have a look on www.mroscoobystyling.com under MY01 front bumper, thats my little terror...........

Edited to say:

The Red badge is home made and gives an extra 10 points to my already massive Chav count.

Also may I add, that Im not happy that you have not replied with:
'Oh my God, that look brilliant'.

Cool

Had 6 months of horrendous noise..finally found to be

Weld breaking off and flying into the turbo
turbo gaskets/seal failing
Turbo stripped and rebuilt

All based on one problem, but took a hell of a time to find out..and the car sounded like a right munter

A major hassle was i was suckered into buying a UK300 with PPP, hmm should have waited 6 months and bought a STI, rather than listen to the falsehoods of the subaru UK dealerships about STI projected price

otherwise its been a decent motor, and moved from a MY98 classic..but you will need the PPP to make it comparable to your terzo.. otherwise it will feel SLLLOOWWWWW

Cheers

Would of thought the WRX to be beefier than our Terzo!!

The Terzo engine is standard, yes its damn quick but isn't the WRX???

Jewels, the classic in standard form was quicker than the UK WRX 01/02 in getting away, well it definitely feels like it, as in standard form, the 01 does not give you the kick in the **** that the classic did. With PPP added its a different story, so if you can find one with PPP or any other reasonable mod that does not nail the engine.. then that would be my recommendation, i could not move from the classic to the 01 without the necessary changes..

Cheers

Thumbs up

had mine a year and still love it - only problem is I think the drivers side window seal is bust, I can hear the wind blowing through it, if i open and close the window it sorts it self out,

if you are a gold wheel, big spoilers and big exhaust guy, forget the ppp and get a ecu tek with de cat, cause you will only de funk the warrenty later with something stupid like a back box or air filter

first mods - lowering springs, then ecu tek/de cat, will drive how a subaru shoud rather than the taxi style saloon it starts life

Hi all! Just borrowing Jewels' "sign in" coz I aint got registered yet!!! Tis me thats thinking of changing my Terzo for a WRX.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and info, lots of food for thought there.

I'm fairly new to the Scooby scene, only had mine 14 months so still learning more about each of the various models etc. I had been led to believe that a WRX was kinda like a step up from standard 2.0 turbo model. I thought they were around 245bhp in standard trim. Am I wrong then? I had figured that swopping the Terzo for a WRX would be a natural step up!!! I'll keep a look out in here for any more info.

Thanks again people.

I am sure they come std with 215 (ish) bhp (uk spec jap spec may have 245bhp) I think i would be fair to say the quality is a step up but the performance and handling will be a downward step unless you start hitting the options list

ive never owned a classic but i have read people have moved back to a classic after a bugeye

I have had a lot of classic's, very good car's and fast,
now own a MY02 WRX with a few mod's (to catch up on speed).
plus i would'nt change it for a classic again, although there's nowt wrong with the classic, i like the comfort

The WRX is the standard 2.0 turbo - it's just that until '01 they didn't call it that in the UK. They put out the same power as MY99 and OO Turbos from memory - a little more than the pre-99 cars.

I moved from a mechanically standard MY98 to one of the last MY02 cars. I've had it 15 months and it hasn't missed a beat - not a single problem.

Build quality is much better than the old model and the ride feels much better. Is it as quick? Dunno, and to be honest, don't really care. It is a better car.

Guess perhaps we need to go 'WRX' hunting then!

Nick says he cannot understand the mentality of women sometimes! Not wanting to swop for a Terzo! Doh!

The Terzo is great, dunno why he wants to change it anyway. The only time my horns come out is driving it! otherwise I stick to my girlie beamer

Totaly agree with doofus, I cant fault my 02 wrx, but like everyone says once you get used to it youl want it faster. This is not a problem just remove 1 cat and stick on an exhaust get it ecuteck re-mapped and your looking at 270-280 BHP.

One thing i have noticed that a couple of other people have mentioned is the wind noise, mine has a loud noise at 60-65 MPH like blowing over a milk bottle, only does it at this speed which is not a problem cos you just speed up.

Also have to agree with doofus that the 01/02 model is much more didtinct and IMHO better looking than the 03.

I've had my MY02 WRX for just over a year now and I love it to bits

The only 2 downers I've had is slight clutch judder (which is to be sorted soon) oh and I think the std windscreen that comes with it is possibly too thin - my advice crack it and get an Autoglass replacement...much better and no wind noise at 95

Ref the service intervals for the 01. Speak to your dealer nicely and they may upgrade you to 12 month intervals. I had my 01 UK300 upgraded and issued with a new service book.
