Fully synth 10W40 - 10W60.

Previous dealer used Shell Helix Ultra (or some other premium word)
Current dealer plays in Castrol RS 10W60.

5w30 is too thin, the normal oil used by Subaru UK is 10w40 semi synthetic, most people change to the first posted oils which are better.

Tony

PS, Julian, if i see you today, ill have my dutch manual with the correct oil grades in for you to have a look at so forget what the yanks say, its not what you should use

5w/30 is too thin at high temperatures IMO. Needs to have warm temp viscosity of at the very least 40w

The dutch handbook has the same recommendations as the uk classic handbook, it says (off the top of my head as ive put the thing somewhere and cant find it now... DOH!)
5w30 shell fully synthetic, can be run in the sport without problems, for turbo engines its recommended for temps of 0 dec C and below (there is also a part about not pushing the car hard with this oil in it), -20 to +40 has a 10w40 recommendation (semi synthetic).
