Might have to cut my outgoings soon to allow a career/life change. I realise my 03WRX+PPP wagon aint the cheapest car to run (especially on fuel + tyres) but wondered if anyone had either gone this way and could say what sort of annual savings it can result in, or has worked it out on paper with some magic formula

I'm thinking of maybe a secondhand Seat Leon TDi, Focus TDCi (Gasp!) or a late 306 Hdi. Budget would be about 7-8k. I do about 15k miles a year.

The thing that does my head in when trying to work it out is figuring in the depreciation on my scoob - it's almost a year old, has 15k on the clock, but I reckon I'd only get around £16k for it (meaning a loss of £6k as I had some options put on at purchase and it cost me £22k). Gulp!!!

I bought my scoob with a bank loan, half of it is paid off already meaning i have £11k left to clear on it.

Not sure overall whether it makes financial sense to sell the scoob and get a turbo diesel or just keep it and accept the higher running costs?

Always remember that your own car is a known quantity! the fresh one isn't. When working out how much cheaper it will be to run, you will have to go through everything ie, petrol, you will only save the difference between the two, say the scoob does 20mpg average and the new one does 35mpg thats a saving of 15 mpg, you say you do 15k a year @ 79p a litre(£3.58 gallon( (diesel/optimax) that works out at a saving of £1151. Insurance costs will no doubt be a lot cheaper. Service/parts will also be cheaper. BUT CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT THAT FLAT FOUR BURBLE???

I run an MY 99 and do 30k a year, this was costing me £430 a month on petrol (750 miles a week and 300 miles to the tank). I now own a Leon TDi and this costs me £240 a month to fuel up leaving a difference of £190 for which I can pay for the purchase of the Leon.

i have the best of both worlds, a my93 jap import WRX, and one of the best diesels( i think anyway!) an astra diesel estate, 1.7td, try getting a cheap diesel, and runing two. you can get good uns for 500 squids!!!!!!!

How much cheaper to run ?

At least 35% cheaper per annum in my experience. Obviously mileage related (fuel, servicing, wear and tear bits, tyres). That was against an A4 TDi Quattro V6.

I went back to an Impreza when the company paid for my fuel etc and in the last year have run a 4x4 Turbo Octavia (220bhp). Over the last year and 15,000m it has been 40% cheaper to run for the same mileage, so with a cheaper, higher mpg diesel, its a LOT cheaper.

I did think about keeping the Impreza and getting a diesel as well, but compromised on one car as above - 85/90% of the performance, grip etc with 60% of the running costs

I used to run a scoob on the company and never looked at how much it cost but it was a lot as I do in excess of 30K a year. When the new tax law came in I sold the scoob and got a TDI golf with 50K on it and run it on the government allowance (40ppm first 10K then 25ppm after that) This covers all costs for the golf and also pays for an 850 T5 for my wife to run the kids around in, and I can use it at the weekend for a bit of fun

Sorry.. when I saw this listed, I thought it was a joke question... don't forget if you get something with an engine size of less than 1499cc, you'll save on road tax too... turn your heating down to 15 degrees c and wash your clothes on 40 not 60...doh!

How is asking how much cheaper diesels are to run than scoobs a joke question? As I said I have a probable major life change coming up so money could get tight (obviously something that will never happen to you you arrogant t*sser) and need to know how much better off I would be flogging my scoob and getting a sh*tty diesel.

Thanks to those who have posted helpful relevant replies anway. If I do sell the scoob I certainly won't miss the tw*ts like Scrappydoo2003 who are becoming more prevalent on Scoobynet.

Now I must remember to look out for Scrappydoo2003's posts so I can see what type of topics I'm allowed to post about. Let's hope they're good ones

Blip, I know someone who bought a focus diesel, can't quote any figures but can say economy seems to be a high point of the ownership for them and this seems to fit the bill quite nicely. The peugeot option is also highly recommended from people I work with that have one.

I was running a MY01 WRX (opt out company car) I was getting 200 miles on a tank and service costs, tyres insurance costing a packet. Worked out I would save over £4,000 a year by getting a Diesel!!!! (20,000 miles)

So I did it, got a Peugeot 406 2.2HDi Coupe, 500+ miles per tank (48/52 mpg), service costs £122 for 12 / 24K £221 for 36k then back to £122 for 48 / 62K. Cam belt at 96k. and insurance 1/2 of the scooby

The car looks great for a diesel and spec up to hell, full heated leather, sat nav, great sound system and goes very well.

Ok not as much fun as the scooby but with what I save in a year I could quite easy run a classic turbo as a weekend car!!!
