If your timing map is any good

Made a visit to powerstation today for them to sort out my ignition map, which was done by Interpro.

You could not really call it a map, more of a block!!starting from about 3k rpm it had -3deg of retard right the way through

Dirk at PS remaped it from the start(with a little help from Harj's map>>>thanks mate).Anyway after 5 full throttle runs@1.3 bar it made 301.5bhp and the air temp was 20deg c.The last time I was there it made 283bhp @1.4 bar with air temp of 14deg!!!

So the moral of the story is more boost does not always mean more power....I think

A very happy jon!

Thumbs up

Jon

Sounds impressive, but for the benefit of an ignorant newcomer (me!), can you explain some of what you posted - especially the bit about 3 deg of retard etc.

Thanks

Chris

Im probably gonna be corrected on this but (and i dont know much about cars) its something to do with when the spark plugs ignite the fuel mixture advance or retard.

Cheers
Simon (thinking hes right but probably aint)

My timing was advanced by some 6deg!!on the interpro map and 3 degs above the jecs ecu..I suppose the water injection helps here?

Mark my car was run with even more advance than above,to the point where there was very slight det(not enough to abort the run)then 2degs was taken out for saftey..so 1.4 should still be o.k ?? I think.
p.s got your VF22 fitted yet?

JON,

between runs at PS - 1 deg more advance gave me an extra 8ft/lb of torque, with 0.02bar less boost!

It makes sense anyway, as a standard 100RON STi will make 276/280 and most aftermarket chips need more boost than standard to match these figures on 97RON...

...I suspect mainly cos the standard ECU goes right to the edge of ignition advance - and then starts detting!

Jon,

And just think what it would be like if it was mapped correctly for 1.4bar .

Jon,

Retarding 2 deg from "very mid det" should be very safe, I suspect that on the road, there wouldn't be any det' at all. Personally I would have checked it on the road, with some real air flow, and load, before I retarded the ignition (using det cans).

You could probably run 1.4bar with your current ignition map, but I would get it checked first.

If you run a map, with, and without WI, the car will produce more power WITHOUT the WI, assuming the car isn't detting. On the RR, the ONLY reason the cars get more with, than without, is because the WI is "recovering" LOST power due to intake/engine temps, NOT gaining it.

To gain power when using WI, the map needs to be adjusted, increasing either, or both boost/ignition, and normally the fuel needs reducing.

I'm waiting for the return of some ported/coated headers before the VF22 goes on. Then I'll have to re-map the ecu.

Should be fun .

Mark.

JON,

my figures were merely illustrative - as in 8ft/lb per 1 deg, what if I added 6 deg (e.g. another 48ft/lb of torque).

OK, I know it is not that linear - I am currently playing with advance to see where I get to. I still contend that the JECS does give a lot of power at 1.1bar compared, relatively, to what we get with say 1.3/1.4 bar with LINK and Unichip, whatever.

Good improvements range from 10-30bhp (similar for torque with the extra boost). My figures are based on the PS type numbers. Although my 272/264 feels a hell of lot faster than my 300+ at PE

MY torque didn't change that much...but it's comes in @3800(a full 1k earlier!)and stays flat to about 6400rpm.

I had a good chance to drive it on roads I know well and it's the throttle response
and the way the power stays on right to redline, seems very diffrent to a boost related power increase

Mark
Would love to be able to play with all my parameters as you possum boys...but thats the downside for us UNICHIP boys,or maybe a pluside in some cases

Maybe we should all go back to ps when they have got their new MONSTER FAN..which will give 74mph of wind speed..COOL

Cool

Jon,

Are your comparative figures for the same turbocharger? I seem to recall that you mentioned changing a second (! ) broken turbo for a vf22 recently...
