bought some halfords engine cleaner on the strength of recommendation of a previous thread as the results look amazing, just reading the back and it says not to use on unlaquered aluminium. does this mean i can't use it on the engine?

forgive my lack of correct terms, but the ally tubey bit that the coil pack sits on is aluminium and the only protection seems to be a slightly gunky film that all the crap sticks to.

does the cleaner remove this and if so does this leave the aluminium open to the elements (and possible corrosion?)

if it is ok to spray the stuff everywhere, what has been found the best way to wash it off? i don't really fancy letting the hose gun loose under there with all the electrics, or are they suitably sealed?

any replys to any of the questions would be most appreciated,

I have used the halfords stuff
I used it in most places including the tubey bit
Where there was a load of gunk, i agrivated it in with a 2" paint brush, and left it to soak for a few minutes.
To rinse it off i used a large garden spray can (the type with a handle at the top to pump up the pressure). It has a lance type sprayer, and i was able to adjust the spray and direct it only where needed.
It looks loads better afterwards

think i'll give it a go, might leave the 'tubey bit' until the salt buggers off of the roads round here,

hoskib & greg, The 'tubey' bit is the inlet manifold and you'll be fine in that area. What you MUST NOT DO is get the relays [ electrical plasticky things with tubes and wires coming out ] on the drivers side suspension mounting tower, wet. They react very badly to wet and will quite often fail. The value of all 4 is about 900 quid if you buy new ones.........

Also don't squirt power hoses at the intercooler, the radiator thingy lying flat over the back of the engine. If you squash all the fins down it won't work correctly and the engine will not perform properly.

Otherwise wash and squirt gently away - so to speak

I must say i like your technical descriptions

Tubey thingey seems like a fairly accurate description for an inlet manifold to me
