What do you reckon of the Legacy Outback SE 3 Litre?

I am starting to think that I could do with a change - would I be able to live with an Impreza Turbo/Outback 3Litre swap?
Remember I am still on my ORIGINAL set of brake pads and the clock is rolling towards 48,000 miles! So I am no RoyBacer.
Anyone taken one out?

Took out the new '04 Sports Tourer (5dr) 2.5ltr auto (as they didn't have a manual one).
Very nice car to drive, and handled really well for such a big old bus! Infact, not that different to the Impreza. Powerwise, the 2.5 is OK, the 2Ltr is very under powered.
The thing I can't wait to see is their multi function display unit that replaces the centre cubby hole/clock - seems to include some fancy monitoring stuff and navi.
The thing I still can't get over is how different the interior finish is, it really is very nearly BMW quality - although road noise is still an issue, as in all scoobys.
It was nice of B&C to let me test pilot the two cars, specially as they know I'm not likely to change my current car anytime soon.
Sorry it doesn't related to the 3ltr Pete, but hope it helps.

Thanks Alex - read a quick report that says, 'The moment you step into the cabin you get the feeling this will last forever' - true?
Its a pity the 3.0litres are both Auto. the R and Rn

I had a good look at the 04 3.0R Tourer at the NEC Autosport show.
It has the Lexus LS400 style vacuum display (blank screen powers up) and the plastics have moved on again.
The bit that impressed me in a nerdy kind of way was the door-shut.
It's really well damped and shows that they have spent a LOT of time on shifting the quality upmarket.
Its the usual UK Legacy story - better build and refinement than the equivalent Impreza, but guess what - no manual boxes on the 3.0 and no Turbo in the UK (last one 1995)

I suggest you get down to your local dealer and take a look.
My brother, who is real Audi/BMW fan, is actually considering the new Legacy as the interior has a very german feel about it and the car's handling really doesn't make it feel like he was expecting it should (ie. a bus!) - he was most impressed with the alround package.
You'll have to let us know how you get on, all the best, Alex

I think I would like one too Mr Lewis - Had 2 Legacys already 2.2 GX and Turbo - brilliant cars Truth be told I preferred them to the Impreza - did I really write that?????
How about seeing if we can get a good price for a group buy

I own both an impreza and an outback, the outback is a fantastic vehicle and a great 'ute', it is only the 2.5 but goes and handles well for a big bus.
I would love a new one.

To me it's major competitor is not any of the German brands - I think the Volvo XC90 is 'the daddy' in this class of vehicle currently. Although a little toward SUV class rather than 4x4 Estate such as the Outback.

One thing holding me back is the £27000 price tag on the one I want! Thats one big bunch of notes!
The up-front £27k is no issue in itself, its the residual come 4 years down the line .... you just know that the money is going to be chasing Volvo/Audi/BMW/Merc metal in its class .... consequently, you are looking at one hell of a hit - what will it be worth? £7k? OUCH!!!
I may just have a look though!
