You put the number on retention,which costs £105,DVLA then issues a number for your car relating to the year and you are then the owner of the Prv number to do what you like.ie sell or transfer to another car.

On a related note, anyone know what I'd have to do in this situation:

I have a car with a private plate on it. If I buy a new private plate (say, from the DVLA site), I want to get the new one on the car and the old one onto retention. Do I have to do two transfers, or just one?

I tried phoning DVLA but after 20 minutes on hold I gave up.

no carl when you buy the plate from the dvla this will have the transfer fee included into the price so all you do is put the old plate on retention costs 105 for the year then u just assign the new plate on the car theyl give you new taxdisc etc

carl, 2 m8. You get the one from dvla on a ticket, put the old one on retention then put the new one on the car. (at least dvla is an all inclusive price).

NOTE you have to renew retention certificates every year at a cost of £25. If you dont you lose the number.

Go to your local office, I went to the new Preston office last monday and they could not have been more helpful.

I am doing a transfer at the moment but I own both cars so its easy. I stuck my last plate on the banger escort but now my STi's plate is last years its time to do the transfer.

What I want to do is this:

Transfer old->retention, new->car, i.e. two transactions as suggested.

What I suspect may happen, from reading the DVLA documents is this:
Transfer old->retention
New random number assigned, transferred to car
Transfer new private plate to car, random number plate now ditched
Which is 3 transactions. Surely the reason it's £105 to transfer to a retention cert is that the £25 covers the certificate admin, and the £80 covers the admin of assigning a new number. But I don't want that new number -- I want the one I've bought, for which I've already paid the £80 assignment fee.

ring you local VRO (VEHICLE REGRISTRAION OFFICE - number is in the telephone book) or better pop in they are very good. If you have the right docs they will do it over the counter.

{Hello}
Its a shame I cant buy a plate and get it put on at the same time when/if I buy to kill two birds with one stone unless, you just chuck it in anyway
