Keen on buying one, but would like to experience it first.
Is there anybody in the hants/berks area with one of these cars who would be willing to let me have a look, maybe even take me out for a wee blast?
Cheers

Hi mate.
I've got a 96 STI RA, so I can tell you a bit about that if it helps?
On the plus side, the acceleration from this car is awesome, both from a standing start, and more importantly, in the overtaking ranges. I frequently find myself checking which gear I'm in, because it pulls as hard in 4th as many similar powered cars pull in 3rd. Part of the perfomance is down to the car being lightweight. I believe most imported cars have an aluminium boot and bonnet, and the RA (Rally Altered) goes a step further by having virtually all its soundproofing removed. This becomes REALLY apparent at motorway speeds!
Also, the RA does without central locking, electric windows/mirrors, airbags or ABS, which keeps the weight down.
The roof vent is a bit of a novelty, but it does scoop in lots of cool air in the summer.
The downside is the close ratio gearbox, fitted as standard with a quickshift. Because the RA is geared for sheer acceleration, it loses out on top end, and is only good for about 120mph. I know this is pretty irrelevant on UK roads, but the main problem is that when the car is doing about 80 mph, the engine is doing about 5000rpm. (My BMW 328i did 80 at 3200rpm, by way of comparison).
So fuel consumption is as brutal as accelearation! About 21mpg on an average day.
And this is exactly why I'm selling mine! As a weekend or second car, an STI RA is unbeatable for sheer driver involvement and fun, but they are not the best tool for hacking in and out of town every day.
Hope this helps, feel free to email if you want any more info. (or want to buy a weekend/second car!)
Best wishes

I hit the rev limiter in my MY95 STI RA many times, exactly 135mph at 8000rpm...not a great motorway car!!!
I couldn't live with mine if it was my only car, I'm lucky enough to own a 2001 M5, but on a sunny morning and a nice twisty road I'll take the scooby every time.
They do make excellent track day car's.
Dom.

Hi Wad.
Don't know if you saw my post up above, but got one for sale, have a look on the "For Sale" section, probably towards the bottom of page 1, maybe page 2 by now.
Let me know if you want any more info, about mine or RA's in general.
Regards

Thanks for your replies. The first one almost put me off! but I'm still keen to try one out to make up my mind between STi RA or STi Saloon.
I'm really looking for a version 3 and believe (hope!) I can get which ever I decide to go for for about 8k. Bonsai (importers, nothing to do with trees!!) just sold a STi3 saloon for £7495.
Cheers

You're welcome mate!
Needn't be put off owning a RA, just forewarned about their consumption and noise! Although mine is up for sale, I'm half hoping I don't get any offers. Went out in it today and just laughed out loud at the sheer rudeness of the car. The sound effects from under the bonnet when you're overtaking, and acceleration which slams you back into the seat, even in 4th, is absolutely addictive!
Good luck finding your car, you'll love it!
Best wishes

By the way, saw a couple of RA's on Autotrader's website last week, one WRX RA and the other a STI RA. If you search within 100 miles a PE8 postcode you might still see them.
