Question

Which to go for?
It will be my everyday car, would like to do track days, maybe even sprint/hillclimb. What sort of top end does the RA allow (fast enough for circuit use?) I will be upgrading braking and suspension and the basic zorst, induction and ecu remap. Will I miss the ABS if I'm upgrading the brakes?
Input much appreciated.
Thanks

Thumbs up

First things first....
The type RA's wont have ABS, the standard 4 door STi on the other hand will.
Brakes are better than other models (4 pot front, 2 pot rear compared to single caliper on other cars).
The Type RA (is this a Limited?) will have different gear ratio's over a standard STi, they will be shorter but you will get a DCCD which is better if your going to do hill climbs.
Lots of pro's and cons, you really need to speak to owners of both the standard 4 door STi and an STi type RA owner to get a better view of things

I have an RA, but not as a daily driver. I'd prefer an STi for road driving, and an RA for track days / competition.

Test drive an RA, see if you can live with the extra noise and low gearing!

BTW, the both the STi and STi RA are equipped with DCCD

Question

James,
I think the car(s) in question we are talking about are the classic shape, with this you couldnt have ABS and the DCCD so the standard 4 door sti doesnt come with it, newer versions (post MY01) do have DCCD fitted to the JDM cars as they have now gotten round the ABS problem

Wadsy,
The JDM version of the STi (my01 year or the 7) would be the one with the DCCD and ABS, yep.

Wadsy.. mine's actually completely different to most. It's stripped out, caged, tuned and on pretty hard suspension so it wouldnt be a fair comparison! It's also a WRX type RA with no DCCD just to confuse matters - although these are quite rare. What sort of budget / model year are you looking at?

That'll probably be an STi 2 (model year 95) then. You'll get a very tidy one for that money. The RA gearbox in 95 was very short indeed. If this is your everyday car, I'd suggest you go for the STi. The best bit is that the STi 2 has a closed deck block and a TD05 turbo, both great starting points for tuning!

The version 3 is pretty similar, I'm sure you'll find something for £8k - might take a bit of haggling though
