Help...WRX or A3 Turbo

After years of "not getting round to it", I'm really keen to get into Track Days. Been on a couple at Castle Coombe and I'm hooked! The season starts in March and between now and then I want to buy a Track Day car... but what??!
My everyday car is an Audi A4 1.8T Cabriolet which has been -remapped giving it just over 200BHP and I love it to bits. I love the whole Audi thing, the design, build and the strong little engine that (when not under warranty etc) you can do so much with.
However, before getting my current Audi I was going to get a WRX with Pro Drive Performance Pack. What a beast! But as an everyday car that I use for work etc, it was a bit too hardcore, and when comparing it to an Audi, the enterior finish was put to shame. But after the test drive I was hooked on the power and grip.
So, armed with about £5,000 to £6,000 to spend on a Track only car, what should I buy? I'm torn between two cars. I can afford a 1998 Audi A3 1.8T Sport or I can buy a '95 WRX from the Japanese Import Car Auctions and still money to spare on modifications.
I'm worried about buying a smoked, thrashed old scooby. What should I do?

A3 as a track car you'd probably crash after falling asleep of boredom!
As long as the WRX has verified miles and correct servicing, it will probably be fine. Im on scoob no 4 and one of them had 120k miles, no problems...
The early WRX is is very capable car. My standard one used to keep up with V7 STi's!

Type RA (Race Altered, lighter and with more frantic gearing), an STi RA if you can find one within your budget, or a regular WRX type RA will be just fine
enjoy!
