Went out to the car this morning and just as I turned the ignition to the start position I heard a bleep come from the alarm system. The car didn't start and did the same thing the second time. The car then started no problem ???
Has anyone else had this? There didn't seem to be a problem with the alarm, no doors open etc.

Can't really help but I do remember a similar thread on here about a month ago, or maybe a bit more.
Don't remember the conclusion but in the end no one was getting too worked up about it. Now, perhaps it was a P1 rather than an STi8. Hmmm.
Not very helpful I know but at least you are not the only one :-)

On classic models this can be an indication that your battery is on it's way out
Unlikely on such a new car but with the colder weather there could be a fault somewhere that is putting a drain on the battery.
Worth maybe getting it checked out...
PS Mine chirped for a while,, then died

'Ello Mate,
There was thread regarding cold start problems but i don't remoember anything about bleeps. There is a Subaru recognised starting problem with the STI8's particularly on cold damp mornings.Mine seems to have sorted itself though.

If its a UK car wasn't there a known issue with batteries failing, if the battery was pulled low during cranking then the alarm would react, and it wouldn't start as the volts were down.

SiPie,
My MY96 has been doing that for the last 2 years. Normally only when cold when there is the most drain on the batt. It turns over slowly on start up. Bit like me really.
Lots of people have commentated on it.

My STi8 occasionally does exactly the same thing on very cold mornings. The alarm will chirp but the engine will start. I have pre-warned the dealer and he will have no problem in changing the battery if the problem persists.
It is obviously the sudden voltage drop triggering the system. One thing that definately helps is to always hold the clutch down when starting, this relieves the starter of the job of churning thick gear oil. Just watch the revs drop when you let the clutch pedal back up, it gives you an idea of the power required to turn a cold gearbox!
Before you start on a cold morning check the voltage if you have a voltmeter, it should be around 12.2/12.5 min. If it,s any less insist on a new battery (As Bob says there have been occasional problems with STi7/8 batteries)
