Legacy GT

Off to New Zealand in february where (judging by net surfing) used car market seems very different. Very difficult to find anything below NZ$3000 (1k sterling) built in the 90s. Lots of Jap imports. Planning on buying something with 4x4 for mountains, running for 6 months and selling before coming back to blighty
The plus side seems to be that you can pick up subarus on the cheap. Obviously impreza prices firm (same reputation as here) but have seen Legacy GTs (twin turbo flat four) without intergalactic miles for around NZ$10k which seems good value at around 3.5k?
Any thoughts?
Anything I need to look out for buying 92-93 legacys?

well I've not owned 1, but am in the process of researching on them as thinking of buying a '94 GT Auto p/ex from the Main Agent. All I can find thats worrying is the electronic controlled 4 spd Automatic g/box, if it goes, and I've heard bad stories, your into a BIG headache, but thats not new news is it, lag from switching 2 second Turbo at 3k rpm can be annoying.......lovely looking cars, quite a few WRX bits on them.

This is a personal Import Jap '94 mdl Legacy 4WD GT/Wagon 2.0 Twin Turbo Auto, Forest Green...rated at between 260-280bhp I think?
Lovely looking thing, with 16's, low suspension, but wish it was 5spd, would've had a bit more guts to go 4 it,......anyone now/like to comment on Auto box reliability??
