Pre 95 WRX's. Don't let the MOT man fob you off
#1
Just had a bit of a nightmare MOTing my 94 WRX. Due to a full decat it predictably failed the emmisions test, surprisingly it was even worse with the centre cat on. Was sent home with the prospect of having to do the knuckle stripping, bolt sheering, time consuming pain in the **** that is Impreza downpipe removal.
Anyway, after a bit of searching and a few helpful hints from you lot, found a glitch in the MOT regs. The MOT tester HAS to, according to the MOT handbook, find an exact car match for a full cat test on pre 95s. Due to it being an import WRX, an exact match can't be found on there database so they have to do a non cat test. This also applies to roadside emmisions tests. Mine flew through no problem.
So if you own a pre 95 with cats, get shot of em and legally enjoy those extra horses and deep exhaust note.
Edited to say. I think this applies to cars built up to August 95 . May be wrong though.

WRXs don't have a centre cat on AFAIK, it's just a silencer.
I think some MOT stations have more upto date databases though.
Agreed, this is not the weather to be banging knuckles.

I think there are different grades of non cat test. But trust me , the guy did it by the book. I did ask initially if there was "anything he could do" He was having none of it, which I suppose is fair enough as they lose points if they get caught.

Not wishing to rain on anyones parade, but aren't the cats actually there for a purpose? i.e. helping to protect people and the environment from the effects of pollution? Is it really worth f*cking all this up even further just for a few extra horses?

All of the information is in the testers guide to which the general public are allowed to be shown.
steve.(mot tester/authorised examiner)
p.s if you worry about the enviroment then campaign to get all of the dirty/smelly diesels off the road

TORBOTITS - think that's the point to an extent, cut emissions at low speed and revs, i.e. round town where all the cars sitting idling in traffic jams pump out loads of crap.
Time for somebody to develop a twin exhaust system that runs through a CAT below about 2000rpm then switches to de-cat above.

EXHAUST NOISE
What is the criteria for failing cars with modified exhaust systems producing more noise than the standard system? Do MOT testers have access to noise meters?
No, it is a matter for the Tester to decide whether or not the vehicle is producing excessive noise - MOTT.

When I personally imported my car 3 years ago I got all the bumfph on emissions. IIRC all imports from outside the EU need a cat fitted from August 1995 onwards.

Your all correct - pre August 1995 is OK without cats because it's not on the database. After this point, I think the imports are listed and therefore have to be catted to pass
So anyone want to buy my MY95 with full decat???

this is useful info as i have MY95 (Nov '94) with full decat and am booked in for M.O.T on 23rd. i do know the tester (used him many times over the years), so i doubt he'd have any problem with confirming the legislation or fobbing me off otherwise - but its still good info for those of use with older motors!

just seen this from a link, some odd ideas in here!
Erm.. NO. the cat only works when it's hot. so when you are pootling about it doesn't work and it does when you're giving it some.
"taking your cat off will kill everyone"
sort of? a cat turns poisonous gasses (CO and NOx) into greenhouse gasses (CO2 and N)!
if you are really worried about exhaust gas emmisions, don't go on holiday! aircraft produce more exhaust gasses than everything else put together!
Cats only work when the car is at idle when your pumpining up the motor way they dont do anything except hold the horse's back. so enviromentally there a waste of time.

Last time i got my emission test The mot tester printed me out on his printer about half a f uking tree of paper telling me the results of the test -- How the f uck is this any good for the gay enviroment
